Eseye Pipe Leakage Detection
3.3 billion litres of water are lost through leaking pipes each day in the UK. As a result, water authorities face increasing demand to find innovative ways to monitor water flow within pipes. Currently, GSM data loggers are used to monitor water flow wirelessly and improve the efficiency of dealing with leaks. The big problem with GSM loggers is they use a network specific SIM, which means different SIMs are required for different locations due to network coverage.

New Supercar Engine Assembly Perfected by Manufacturing Execution System
This document summarizes the manufacturing execution system (MES), or manufacturing operations management (MOM) solution implemented by a leading Automotive manufacturer to manage the complex assembly of the engine for their new Supercar. The MES/MOM was integral to ensure each and every single of the nearly two-thousand (2,000) process steps involved to build the engine were completed to the set specifications or tolerances without fail. MES/MOM ensured zero-defects during the assembly of the engines since it monitored and controlled all operations; all tools and devices, and the line workers themselves since the MES/MOM directed them from job start to end. The MES/MOM verified worker credentials, provided work instructions, and confirmed that the materials and tools were properly selected for the exact task at hand. Destined for the Automotive manufacturer’s highest-performance GT sports car (see Figure 1), the twin-turbo charged V6 “EcoBoost” engine is vital to the success of the final product. Given the intricacy of the engine and the number of steps needed to assemble it, and its high tolerances, the MES/MOM proved indispensable.

Optimizing Inventory & Anticipating Maintenance
An aircraft manufacturer wanted to improve their spare part inventory management for 15,000 out of production aircraft. Customers needed stock parts that couldn’t be sourced since they were never required to be repaired or replaced on the aircraft. The parts would need to be produced on demand and have a long lead time for production - typically up to six months - resulting in airlines grounding their aircraft at an average loss of one million per day. As a result, the manufacturer needed to anticipate which of their spare parts would fail before an issue was communicated - leading to better inventory planning, supply chain decision making, and a total reduction in operating costs. Additionally, the company wanted to know whether to purchase more than one spare part at a given time when a problem had been reported, whether they should stock a certain spare part in advance due to the long lead time, and whether they could reduce the number of service engineer man hours spent answering customer questions about the stock parts by having better access to information. Stocking decision was also made difficult because of limited communication between the spares management employees and the service engineers, resulting in high levels of ‘dead’ stock for the manufacturer. The goal was to reduce maintenance costs and increase customer satisfaction and retention without compromising aircraft production quality, safety and lives.

Burlington Bridge
More than 300 trains crossed the Burlington Bridge every month and tons of travel on barges below. It was therefore decided that shutting down rail or river traffic during the construction of a new bridge would only be allowed during a single 30-hour period. With such heavy usage demands, constant river level changes and the inherent complications of working with a 115 year old bridge, monitoring was key to this project. Knowing how and when the bridge moves, vibrates, tilts and bends proved critical for establishing a safe working environment as well as maintaining the bridge’s operational status.

Discrete Manufacturing Industries (Fiberglass Pipe)
The implementation of ERP software in a Discrete Manufacturing organization needs to be strategic, irrespective of its size and capacity. The client had already implemented an ERP system which fulfilled their requirements but was not efficient enough. Efficiency here meant Synchronized Planning, Updating and Multisite Planning. Planning at client’s place was done outside the ERP system. Lack of proper synchronization to the ERP system paved way to huge delays in the changes getting updated in the system. These delays caused disruption in achieving delivery schedules. Multisite Planning is a solution to an organization which has multiple production units (may or may not be geographically separated) and thus needs planning across these units to synchronize production activities within them. The client also has multiple factories and hence Production Planning control is very essential in their case. Since Multisite planning was not possible with Baan ERP system, this was another bottleneck for the client.

WEST TEXAS GAS TRUSTS WIN-911 ALARM NOTIFICATION SOFTWARE
It became clear that the SCADA system was not an infallible means ofmonitoring field stations; the systems would sometimes lose connection with the host computer. This caused delays in personnel response to alarms and increased the risk of severe warnings not being received before corrective actions could be implemented. As a precaution, the alarm points had to be visually monitored and staff would be required to call the appropriate personnel if an alarm came through. Regulations wereestablished for timely reporting. The management at West Texas Gas quickly determined that a secondary alarm support system needed to be installed. They were seeking something that would be able to monitor variable tags from the OPC server as well as monitor custom tags that were built into the existing SV32 SCADA system to observe and report flare volumes.

Quality compressed air for high-tech products
When it came to modernisation of the existing compressed air station, the company’s management decided to opt for a compressed air contracting arrangement to ensure that the compressed air supply would always meet the latest technical standards and be capable of taking advantage of the benefits that Industry 4.0 has to offer – and not least due to the frequent fluctuations in demand in the automotive supplier industry. In this operator model, the compressed air station itself remains the property of the air system provider, whilst the customer simply uses the compressed air as needed, just like power from an electrical socket, paying only for the volume of compressed air actually used – and always at the same fixed rate. From an accounting perspective, this effectively turns fixed costs into variable costs. At Scholz, the new station was installed in a space-saving container on the roof of the company building.

Maximizing Clinical Availability and Performance with System Connectivity
For over 30 years Elekta has been responsible for introducing many market leading, critical technological advances in radiation oncology. Elekta’s Linear Accelerators support a range of pre-configured and optional delivery techniques, providing the physician with the flexibility to tailor the treatment to suit the needs of each individual patient. Remote access was unavailable on complex devices and Elekta was unable to understand machine performance based on real data, which meant the company could not respond immediately to customer problems. This, in turn, meant that Elekta was unable to detect and solve problems on the spot, restricting the company to a reactive service model. A typical patient treatment schedule could require daily treatment for a period of 4-6 weeks, making machine uptime extremely important. Given the complexity of the device and the amount of data that would need to be collected, it was obvious that an automated solution was required. The infrastructure would need the ability to manage the data volume from the devices and also provide a platform that would scale in both size and complexity. “When a customer buys a service agreement, what they are buying is system uptime. They are buying the ability to consistently deliver treatment… patient to patient,” says Martin Gilday, Vice President of Services at Elekta. “Service is not simply a single engineer with a trunk load of parts, but a full portfolio of technical expertise delivered via multiple channels...it’s a big change in the way that you think about service.” Elekta’s success has been built upon innovative engineering, which led to a culture of in-house work. As the company matured and grew, it realized that this was not necessarily the most effective way of working. With the complexity of the product itself, internal engineering expertise would be crucial to solve the company’s service challenges. While the product itself was unique, the methodologies and best practices of accessing and servicing the product were based on industry standards. When customers have service issues that need to be resolved, machine data must be collected and interpreted, and engineers need a deep level of skills and understanding. An integrated solution that brought the data, knowledge, and skills together in a highly connected environment was required. “Customers see connectivity as providing efficiency gains,” says Bruce Fullerton, Vice President of Service and Support. “Their key performance indicators are based around how many customers they can treat in a given space of time.”
