Activ8 is a contracting company that specializes in the delivery of smart solutions integrating electrical, air conditioning, and security. The company was founded by Shane Robertson, who has nine years of experience owning and running his own trades business. Activ8 started small, with Shane operating out of his mother-in-law’s garage and using an excel-based spreadsheet to track all his jobs. However, the company has grown significantly over the years, with 15 tradesmen working all over Auckland. Despite the initial challenges with job management and paperwork, Activ8 has managed to streamline its operations and is now prepared for more growth.
The Challenge
Activ8, a contracting company specializing in smart solutions integrating electrical, air conditioning, and security, was founded by Shane Robertson out of his mother-in-law’s garage. Initially, Shane used an excel-based spreadsheet to track all his jobs, a system he describes as “agricultural and very organic.” However, as the company grew, managing paperwork became increasingly difficult, especially with 15 tradesmen working all over Auckland. The job management solution Shane initially chose was unreliable, not user-friendly, and resulted in a lot of complaints from his tradesmen. The company was struggling to keep track of the necessary paperwork to get invoicing out in a timely manner, causing significant frustration.
The Solution
Shane was introduced to Fergus, a job management software, at an accounting seminar. Impressed by what he saw, Shane decided to switch to Fergus, a decision that has significantly improved Activ8's operations for the past five years. Fergus has become an integral part of Activ8's business, from the site workers to the administrators and managers. It integrates seamlessly with their accounting software (MYOB), resulting in a much greater turnover of invoicing. The software allows the team to easily track their progress and understand what’s happening within the company. While Shane admits it’s difficult to pinpoint which features they use the most within Fergus, he confirms that they utilize as much of it as possible to suit their business needs.

Smooth Transition to Energy Savings
The building was equipped with four end-of-life Trane water cooled chillers, located in the basement. Johnson Controls installed four York water cooled centrifugal chillers with unit mounted variable speed drives and a total installed cooling capacity of 6,8 MW. Each chiller has a capacity of 1,6 MW (variable to 1.9MW depending upon condenser water temperatures). Johnson Controls needed to design the equipment in such way that it would fit the dimensional constraints of the existing plant area and plant access route but also the specific performance requirements of the client. Morgan Stanley required the chiller plant to match the building load profile, turn down to match the low load requirement when needed and provide an improvement in the Energy Efficiency Ratio across the entire operating range. Other requirements were a reduction in the chiller noise level to improve the working environment in the plant room and a wide operating envelope coupled with intelligent controls to allow possible variation in both flow rate and temperature. The latter was needed to leverage increased capacity from a reduced number of machines during the different installation phases and allow future enhancement to a variable primary flow system.

They aimed to equip their lines with automatic printer applicators, but also required a solution that could interface with their accounting software.
