AI21 Labs needed a robust infrastructure to build proprietary NLP algorithms and serve its suite of language models, including the state-of-the-art Jurassic-1 Jumbo, which comprises 178 billion parameters of data. Additionally, the company required a flexible and scalable solution to meet the demands of different audiences, including both B2C and B2B offerings.
The Solution
AI21 Labs partnered with Google Cloud to leverage its advanced machine learning accelerators and robust infrastructure to build and serve its suite of language models. The company uses a variety of ML accelerators, including high-performance GPUs, to develop its proprietary NLP algorithms. Google Cloud's flexible price-performance options allowed AI21 Labs to choose the most appropriate GPU for each task, enabling the development of both B2C and B2B offerings. AI21 Labs uses Google Kubernetes Engine for its production environment, abstracting functionality to Docker container images, which are used across the company for internal research projects and commercial products. The company also uses Cloud Build for continuous integration pipelines, where code is pushed into Git repositories, built, tested, and deployed via Docker images and internal Python packages. Additionally, AI21 Labs uses BigQuery to batch logging data, providing insights into user usage and benefits gained from its products. Looker Studio is used as a visualization tool on top of BigQuery to analyze data from marketing platforms and payment providers, connecting the dots between spend and revenue.
