The Challenge
Air Astana, the flag carrier of Kazakhstan, was facing significant challenges with its financial reporting process. The company, which operates both domestic and international services across 64 routes in Eurasia, was struggling with a time-consuming and resource-intensive month-end closing process. Generating account cards and trial balances took from 40 minutes to more than one hour per report. At the end of the month, the finance department often had hundreds of reports in the queue. The company's Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system was only capable of processing ten reports at a time, creating a bottleneck and slowing down the entire process. The company needed a solution that could generate reports in less than a minute to boost productivity and efficiency.
The Solution
Air Astana turned to Microsoft Azure Synapse Analytics and Power BI to streamline its financial reporting process. After a two-month trial period, the company saw significant improvements in report generation times, with reports now being generated in just 30-40 seconds. The company's ERP system was no longer burdened with producing time-consuming reports, leading to increased performance and faster month-end closing times. The company also deployed Microsoft Power BI and Azure Synapse Analytics to visualize data in dashboards with specific filters, which were easily configured to meet their requirements. After two months, Air Astana stopped processing heavy reports in the ERP system and switched over to Azure Synapse Analytics and Power BI for reporting.

For Fox and his team, these requirements meant turning to the cloud instead of an on-premises datacenter. “My first thought was to go directly to the cloud because we needed to provide access not only to our salespeople, but to resellers who didn’t have access to our internal network,” says Fox. “The cloud just seemed like a logical choice.”
