The Customer
About The Customer
Ameren is the largest electric utility in Missouri, providing energy services to approximately 1.2 million customers across central and eastern Missouri, including the greater St. Louis area. The company serves 65 Missouri counties and 500 towns, with more than half (55 percent) of its electric customers located in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Ameren's Callaway Nuclear Power Plant in Fulton has an 1100 megawatt capacity. The company was in need of a replacement for a legacy solution that was no longer supported after the year 2000.
The Challenge
Ameren, Missouri’s largest electric utility, was faced with the challenge of replacing a legacy solution that was no longer supported after the year 2000. The company needed a new system that would provide remote access to inline chemistry analyzer readings, including numerical output and trend graphs. The previous system was limited, with live chemistry data only accessible on a few PCs that had the legacy software installed. Ameren also aimed to eliminate the mainframe from the plant, which was a significant goal for the company. The challenge was to find a solution that would not only replace the legacy system but also enhance the accessibility of live data to all personnel on site, provide pager alarm notifications to technicians, and allow for remote accessibility and single web page views.
The Solution
Ameren selected ICONICS’ GENESIS32™ Enterprise Edition HMI/SCADA application, WebHMI™ Web-based, real-time automation software, and the AlarmWorX™32 distributed enterprise-wide alarm and events management system as the replacement for their legacy system. The GENESIS32 system was used to provide remote access to inline chemistry analyzer readings, both numerical output and trend graphs. The AlarmWorX system was used to provide paging alerts to alarm conditions. All the databases and ICONICS applications were made accessible from a single Web page, removing the database from the plant mainframe and allowing access to live chemistry data to all plant personnel. This solution not only replaced the legacy system but also enhanced the overall functionality and accessibility of the system.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the ICONICS GENESIS32 system has significantly improved Ameren's operations. The system has enhanced the access and use of chemistry data by Ameren employees. The integration with Ameren’s existing systems, including Honeywell Micromax2 controls and Microsoft applications, is seamless. The system has also allowed Ameren's chemistry technicians to maintain the system remotely, improving efficiency and reducing the need for on-site maintenance. The successful implementation of the GENESIS32 system has led to Ameren showing interest in the suite’s expanding capabilities, indicating a positive response to the new system.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Ameren now has a single web page from which all databases and applications are accessible, enhancing data accessibility.
  • The new system allows for remote access to inline chemistry analyzer readings, both numerical output and trend graphs.
  • The AlarmWorX system provides paging alerts to alarm conditions, improving response times.
