About The Customer
AMPORTS is a leading vehicle processing company headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, with over 40 years of experience in the industry. The company operates six nationwide port facilities in the United States, including locations in Jacksonville, Florida; Brunswick, Georgia; Benicia, California; and three in Baltimore, Maryland. AMPORTS serves major automobile manufacturers worldwide, including Ford, GM, Volvo, Hyundai, Porsche, and Kia, processing approximately 525,000 vehicles annually. The company employs around 800 people and is known for its comprehensive portside vehicle processing services, which include damage inspections, repairs, washing, and accessorizing. AMPORTS is committed to meeting the high expectations of its customers, providing real-time data and status reports to automakers, and ensuring on-time deliveries. The company’s corporate IT and engineering departments are located in Baltimore, Maryland, at the Atlantic Terminal facility.
The Challenge
At six nationwide port facilities, AMPORTS provides a wide range of services for vehicles being imported and exported by its exacting customer base, which includes Ford, Hyundai, Porsche, and Volvo. AMPORTS provides status reports to the automakers via FTP files and other methods based on the customer’s service expectations. In some cases, sophisticated customers have live input into AMPORTS’ operations. Volvo, for example, specifies cars and tasks for AMPORTS employees using VDM files exchanged directly between the two companies’ IBM systems. Employees working in AMPORTS’ vast parking lots access this information on handheld computers. Just one hour of downtime for the over-$50-million-a-year company could cost upwards of tens of thousands of dollars and create major logistical problems. “Without the port tracking application, we’d be in trouble, it would essentially bring our business to a standstill,” said Leary.
The Solution
AMPORTS’ executives approved the installation of Assure MIMIX HA from Precisely to address its high availability and disaster recovery needs. The implementation was smooth, and the Precisely team received high praise for their support and expertise. Using Assure MIMIX HA, AMPORTS replicates its business-critical systems, including the port-tracking application and JD Edwards financials. The company conducts quarterly switch tests, which have been successful, ensuring that everything is replicating properly. Assure MIMIX HA provides a real-time summary of the high availability environment, allowing AMPORTS to quickly identify and resolve issues before they become problems. This is a significant improvement over the previous method of using audit logs, which often went unanalyzed due to time constraints. The installation of Assure MIMIX HA has given the AMPORTS IT team confidence in their disaster recovery capabilities, ensuring that operations can continue on the backup system and customer reporting can proceed even in the event of an outage.
