About The Customer
Micro Plastics, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of plastic fasteners with over forty years of experience in the industry. The company offers a wide range of products, including screws, nuts, washers, spacers, bushings, panel fasteners, hole plugs, circuit board hardware, hose clamps, wire handling clips, and cable ties. Micro Plastics manufactures these products using a variety of materials, including tough, corrosion-resistant nylon. The company caters to every customer's fastener needs by offering custom molding, professional color-matching, and custom packaging solutions. The primary computer network supporting the business includes approximately 300 workstations and 10 servers based at the company's headquarters in Arkansas. Micro Plastics also operates production plants in Mexico and the United Kingdom.
The Challenge
Micro Plastics, a major plastic fastener manufacturer, was facing the challenge of maintaining the security of its computer network. With over 300 users and 10 servers, the company found it increasingly difficult to monitor potential vulnerabilities and address issues arising from hacker or virus attacks. The company needed a tool that could proactively identify vulnerabilities before they became problems. The company's IT Manager, Reed Kimble, was confident about the security of the network but wanted to verify his instincts. The company was looking for a solution that could identify any potential threats in their operating environment that could be exploited by hackers or viruses, potentially hindering business operations.
The Solution
Micro Plastics chose BeyondTrust's Retina network vulnerability scanner to address its network security challenges. The company was already using BeyondTrust's Iris network traffic analyzer, which helped them monitor internal network traffic and identify new viruses. Retina, a Windows-based scanner, was chosen for its ability to find Windows vulnerabilities. The company uses Retina to scan all of its devices from inside the network at least once per quarter in the U.S. and as-needed at its Mexico and UK plants. The software provides a detailed report of every client, whether or not each client has access to the public Internet. The IT staff then analyzes the results for anything the software determines as critical or high severity, and addresses those issues first. The company also scans the network from an Internet connection outside of the company network to determine if the critical alerts have gone away and which alerts apply only to intruders with access from inside the network.
