About The Customer
British Telecom (BT) is one of the world’s leading telecommunications companies, providing a wide range of services including fixed-line, broadband, mobile, and TV products and services. As a large corporate entity, BT operates one of the largest OLTP (Online Transaction Processing) operations globally, which is crucial for maintaining its extensive customer base and service offerings. The company relies heavily on its database management systems to ensure seamless and efficient operations, particularly for its flagship Customer Services System (CSS). BT's commitment to innovation and excellence in service delivery has positioned it as a leader in the telecommunications industry, with a focus on maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction and operational reliability.
The Challenge
Any downtime can be too much in a world accustomed to instant connectivity, especially for one of the world’s largest OLTP operations like British Telecom. The company was in search of significant improvements in DBMS performance for both its Db2 and CA IDMS operations. The primary focus was on enhancing CA IDMS, which is the foundation of BT’s flagship Customer Services System (CSS). The challenge was to ensure nonstop (24x7) processing and improve the efficiency and reliability of their database management systems.
The Solution
To address the challenges, BT implemented a series of innovative point solutions under the Syncsort Optimize IDMS suite, aimed at achieving nonstop (24x7) processing. These solutions included an online database reorganization module for minimal interruption during updates, a 'soft quiesce' module for uninterrupted database backups, and a 'synchro' module to split CSS application operations across multiple CA IDMS central versions with full buffer coherency. Additionally, a 'megabuffer sequential' module was used to accelerate batch processing, and a database image module was employed for development, testing, and training purposes. BT also utilized Syncsort Optimize DB2, which features a powerful automated index-design tool and an SQL tracer tool for detailed workload analysis. These tools have been made available to the CA IDMS community, and BT continues to engage in joint development with Precisely to enhance its database operations.

Vodafone Hosted On AWS
Vodafone found that traffic for the applications peak during the four-month period when the international cricket season is at its height in Australia. During the 2011/2012 cricket season, 700,000 consumers downloaded the Cricket Live Australia application. Vodafone needed to be able to meet customer demand, but didn’t want to invest in additional resources that would be underutilized during cricket’s off-season.
