The Challenge
Conner Strong & Buckelew faced significant challenges with their existing disaster recovery solution, which relied on an asynchronous, hardware-based SAN-to-SAN mirroring technology. This solution was inadequate as it required a lengthy process to restore data, taking up to four hours, which was unacceptable for maintaining business continuity and customer satisfaction. Additionally, the technology did not provide a way to verify the integrity of the mirrored data, leading to concerns about potential data corruption. The situation worsened when the mirroring process broke, and the vendor was unable to fix or replace the unsupported technology, leaving the company with only daily file-level backups, which were insufficient for their data protection needs.
The Solution
To address its disaster recovery challenges, Conner Strong & Buckelew implemented Assure MIMIX DR for AIX, a robust solution that replicates data from a production server to a backup server in real-time, providing Continuous Data Protection (CDP) for point-in-time recovery. This solution allows the company to restore data to an earlier state, which is invaluable in cases of data corruption due to operator error or malicious intent. The implementation involved replicating data from the primary server in Conshohocken, PA, to a backup server located 70 miles away in Bethlehem, PA, ensuring a true disaster recovery setup. The company tested the recovery process, achieving fast, easy, and flawless data recovery in less than 30 minutes, a significant improvement over the previous four-hour recovery time. The solution also reduced bandwidth requirements, using only 4 MB/sec for full replication and 2 MB/sec for replicating changed data, compared to the previous 80 to 100 MB/sec usage. Additionally, the support provided by Assure MIMIX DR for AIX was highly effective, with knowledgeable personnel available to assist with any issues, ensuring the system's reliability and the company's peace of mind.
