The Challenge
Katerra, a company focused on optimizing building design and construction, faced the challenge of measuring and reducing the energy impact and carbon footprint across their construction and manufacturing processes. Their Tracy, CA factory, equipped with advanced manufacturing equipment, aimed to produce 12,500 multifamily units a year. To offset energy use, a 1.117 MW solar array was installed. However, to further enhance energy efficiency and sustainability, Katerra sought a solution to monitor and manage energy consumption more effectively. The need was to identify energy usage anomalies, phase imbalances, and equipment inefficiencies to prevent energy waste and reduce operational costs.
The Solution
To address their energy management challenges, Katerra partnered with Verdigris to implement an advanced AI-driven energy monitoring solution. Verdigris installed six AI energy meters and 216 smart sensors across six electrical panels and 72 circuit breakers at Katerra's Tracy factory. The installation process was efficient, taking only 8.7 hours, significantly less than typical submetering installations. The system provided real-time, granular energy data, enabling Katerra to monitor energy consumption at each phase of each circuit. Verdigris' AI utilized high-frequency energy data sampling to classify end-use categories such as lighting, HVAC, and automation equipment. By analyzing 21 days of energy data, the AI accurately labeled 98.9% of energy usage, allowing Katerra to identify and address energy inefficiencies effectively.
