The company operates across several branches in Canada and is actively expanding into the United States. D+H's employees, including executives, primarily use desktop or laptop PCs to perform their work, which involves handling critical company data. The company places a high priority on data protection, especially for its highly-mobile executives who require reliable and secure backup solutions. D+H's IT team is responsible for ensuring that all data is backed up and protected, and they are constantly seeking solutions that offer ease of administration and robust data protection features.
The Challenge
D+H, a financial services technology company with over 5,000 employees, faced significant challenges with its existing data backup solutions. The company used SOS Online Backup for hard backups and Syncplicity for syncing data between devices. However, SOS Online Backup was unreliable, often failing to function properly and lacking an admin console to monitor backup status. This made it difficult for the IT team to ensure that data was being backed up correctly. Additionally, Syncplicity had its own issues, as a malware infection on an executive's device led to the loss of all backups due to improper versioning. The situation was dire, as critical company data was at risk, and the existing solutions were not meeting the company's needs for reliable and easily administered data protection.
The Solution
D+H decided to replace its existing backup solutions with Code42 CrashPlan, a decision influenced by the positive experiences of both the IT administrator, Tyler Smith, and the company's CEO with the product. Code42 CrashPlan offered a reliable and easily administered endpoint backup solution, complete with a central admin console for monitoring backup status. The deployment of CrashPlan began in December 2014, with the solution running on a managed private cloud to meet financial industry data protection requirements. Microsoft's SCCM was used to deploy CrashPlan to approximately 100 executive users on a device-by-device basis. The Code42 Professional Services team provided excellent support during the deployment process, answering questions promptly and ensuring a smooth transition. The new solution provided constant, inconspicuous backup for remote executive users, eliminating the need for a VPN connection and allowing for user self-restores, which further enhanced productivity.

Smooth Transition to Energy Savings
The building was equipped with four end-of-life Trane water cooled chillers, located in the basement. Johnson Controls installed four York water cooled centrifugal chillers with unit mounted variable speed drives and a total installed cooling capacity of 6,8 MW. Each chiller has a capacity of 1,6 MW (variable to 1.9MW depending upon condenser water temperatures). Johnson Controls needed to design the equipment in such way that it would fit the dimensional constraints of the existing plant area and plant access route but also the specific performance requirements of the client. Morgan Stanley required the chiller plant to match the building load profile, turn down to match the low load requirement when needed and provide an improvement in the Energy Efficiency Ratio across the entire operating range. Other requirements were a reduction in the chiller noise level to improve the working environment in the plant room and a wide operating envelope coupled with intelligent controls to allow possible variation in both flow rate and temperature. The latter was needed to leverage increased capacity from a reduced number of machines during the different installation phases and allow future enhancement to a variable primary flow system.
