About The Customer
Canva is a visual communication platform with a mission to empower everyone in the world to design. The platform is used by more than 1% of the world's population every month, making it a significant player in the digital space. Canva is a global brand that continues to expand into new markets, making it necessary for the company to be mindful of different international frameworks for measuring and reporting emissions. The company is guided by a 'Two Step Plan' which involves becoming one of the most valuable companies in the world and doing the most good they can. As more people around the world use Canva, their ability to drive change increases.
The Challenge
Canva, a visual communication platform, has a mission to empower everyone in the world to design. However, with the increasing global concern about climate change, Canva recognized the need to incorporate sustainability into its operations. The company was motivated to take action after witnessing the devastating effects of the 2019-2020 Australian bushfires, which destroyed around 18 million hectares of land and killed millions of animals. The challenge was to integrate sustainability into their everyday work and make a significant impact on the environment. As a global brand expanding into new markets, Canva also needed to be mindful of different international frameworks for measuring and reporting emissions.
The Solution
Canva appointed Mike Williams as the Head of Sustainability to lead the company's sustainability efforts. In October 2021, Canva became the first Australian company to sign The Climate Pledge, a global commitment co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism to reach net-zero carbon by 2040. This was a significant step towards their commitment to a sustainable future. Additionally, Canva participated in Frontier, a joint business commitment to accelerate the development of carbon removal technologies. This initiative was in line with the UN International Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) statement that carbon removal is imperative to addressing climate change. Canva also implemented a climate platform like Watershed to ensure accurate measurement of their efforts and streamline their work.
