About The Customer
Duncan Oil is a family-owned and operated company based in Beavercreek, Ohio. The company supplies fuel and lubricant products to a diverse range of industries across the United States, including commercial businesses, agriculture, construction, and government entities. Duncan Oil prides itself on providing top-quality products and excellent customer service, with a strong commitment to integrity, honesty, and excellence. As the company's fleet grew, it faced the challenge of managing its 100-vehicle fleet efficiently, particularly given the environmentally hazardous materials it transports. The company sought to improve driver safety, streamline compliance and fuel management, and reduce administrative tasks for its technicians.
The Challenge
Duncan Oil, a family-owned and operated company supplying fuel and lubricant products across the United States, was facing significant operational challenges as its fleet grew. The company needed a reliable fleet management solution to improve driver safety, especially given the environmentally hazardous materials they transport. They also sought to streamline compliance, fuel management, and dispatching to allow technicians to focus on customers rather than administrative tasks and workflow management. The company was grappling with issues such as vehicle theft, missed customer timelines, compliance fines, safety violations, vehicle downtime, and rising fuel costs. Their previous fleet management provider, Omnitracs, was not only failing to solve these challenges but also adding to the costs and causing significant vehicle downtime due to the need for hardware installation.
The Solution
Duncan Oil switched to Motive for its fleet management needs, drawn by the simplicity of Motive's plug-and-play installation and the potential for cost savings. The non-invasive attachment of Motive's hardware eliminated the need for technician installs or vehicle repairs, and the use of drivers' own devices for connection to the Vehicle Gateways saved on 4G network upgrade costs. Motive's AI Dashcams provided HD video footage that helped exonerate the company in multiple cases, saving millions in legal fees. The platform also enabled Duncan Oil to capture fuel and engine data, aiding in proactive cost reduction, improved vehicle utilization, and reduced carbon emissions. The company was able to monitor fuel consumption and carbon emissions through the Motive portal, aligning with their commitment to safety and environmental consciousness.

Remote Wellhead Monitoring
Each wellhead was equipped with various sensors and meters that needed to be monitored and controlled from a central HMI, often miles away from the assets in the field. Redundant solar and wind generators were installed at each wellhead to support the electrical needs of the pumpstations, temperature meters, cameras, and cellular modules. In addition to asset management and remote control capabilities, data logging for remote surveillance and alarm notifications was a key demand from the customer. Terra Ferma’s solution needed to be power efficient, reliable, and capable of supporting high-bandwidth data-feeds. They needed a multi-link cellular connection to a central server that sustained reliable and redundant monitoring and control of flow meters, temperature sensors, power supply, and event-logging; including video and image files. This open-standard network needed to interface with the existing SCADA and proprietary network management software.

Refinery Saves Over $700,000 with Smart Wireless
One of the largest petroleum refineries in the world is equipped to refine various types of crude oil and manufacture various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel. Due to wear and tear, eight hydrogen valves in each refinery were leaking, and each cost $1800 per ton of hydrogen vented. The plant also had leakage on nearly 30 flare control hydrocarbon valves. The refinery wanted a continuous, online monitoring system that could catch leaks early, minimize hydrogen and hydrocarbon production losses, and improve safety for maintenance.

Integral Plant Maintenance
Mercedes-Benz and his partner GAZ chose Siemens to be its maintenance partner at a new engine plant in Yaroslavl, Russia. The new plant offers a capacity to manufacture diesel engines for the Russian market, for locally produced Sprinter Classic. In addition to engines for the local market, the Yaroslavl plant will also produce spare parts. Mercedes-Benz Russia and his partner needed a service partner in order to ensure the operation of these lines in a maintenance partnership arrangement. The challenges included coordinating the entire maintenance management operation, in particular inspections, corrective and predictive maintenance activities, and the optimizing spare parts management. Siemens developed a customized maintenance solution that includes all electronic and mechanical maintenance activities (Integral Plant Maintenance).
