About The Customer
EC Electric is a leading electrical contractor operating throughout the Pacific Northwest. The company has a diverse portfolio that includes commercial construction, technical systems, energy solutions, traffic management, and service. EC Electric often collaborates with general contractors and owners for preconstruction work, including design-assist and design-build projects. The company leverages its in-house estimating, engineering, BIM, and prefabrication services to influence project design, cost, and schedule. With a strong focus on innovation and efficiency, EC Electric is committed to delivering high-quality electrical solutions to its clients.
The Challenge
EC Electric faced a significant challenge during the expansion and renovation of the Chambers Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant near Seattle, WA. The project required creating a virtual model of the facility using Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D as-builts as part of the project closeout. The accelerated schedule and the high cost of $250k for data capture alone prompted EC Electric to seek alternatives to reduce labor and improve modeling speed and accuracy. The company needed a solution that could help them save significant labor costs and complete the project within the tight schedule.
The Solution
To address the challenges faced during the Chambers Creek project, EC Electric adopted Trimble's 3D scanning and modeling technologies. They purchased the Trimble TX6 3D Laser Scanner, which offered the right combination of speed, range, and accuracy to capture precise 3D spatial data. The scanner's built-in Wi-Fi enabled remote control via mobile devices, allowing for efficient data collection. EC Electric also utilized Trimble RealWorks scanning software to process and analyze the point cloud data. The software's automatic registration and classification features streamlined the creation of a composite 3D point cloud model. By integrating these technologies, EC Electric was able to significantly reduce labor costs and improve safety on the job site.
Operational Impact
  • EC Electric achieved a 90% reduction in labor for 3D modeling the entire project by using the Trimble TX6 3D system.
  • The Trimble system improved safety by eliminating the need for electricians to work in confined spaces or challenging environments.
  • The TX6 scanner's speed and accuracy dramatically increased productivity, allowing EC Electric to capture spatial data more efficiently.
  • The RealWorks software's automatic registration and classification features saved significant time in processing and analyzing point cloud data.
  • EC Electric was able to create accurate as-built models and 3D deliverables, coming in under budget for the modeling costs.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 90% reduction in labor hours for 3D modeling, from an estimated 3,000 manhours to 300 hours.
  • The project expansion increased daily sewer capacity from 28.7 million to 45 million gallons.
  • The project had a total cost of $342 million, with significant savings achieved through the use of Trimble technologies.
