About The Customer
The customer is a regional subsidiary of a multinational power distributor. The company supports households, businesses, and local communities with a wide range of energy solutions. The utility’s employees serve more than 1,000 utilities via its supply network spanning nearly 190,000 km. Some 60 percent of the energy produced by the company comes from renewable sources. The company is committed to supporting the development of renewable energy and is actively seeking solutions to improve its grid reliability and reduce transformer maintenance costs.
The Challenge
The regional subsidiary of a multinational power distributor was facing several challenges. The company needed to accommodate renewable energy on the grid, but had no visibility into medium- and low-power network issues. This resulted in high transformer maintenance costs and poor grid reliability in remote locations. The company also needed to monitor assets in locations with low or no internet connectivity. The utility had to find an economical and reliable way to reduce transformer loss and downtime, and fast!
The Solution
The company adopted the Cumulocity IoT Platform to address its challenges. The platform fulfilled 95% of the utility’s requirements, with the remaining 5% covering various widgets, special SMS protocols, and a NOC user interface taking only three months to prepare. The platform provided an end-to-end solution for status visualization, alarm management, and full integration into the network operations center. The Cumulocity IoT platform integrated easily with any and all of the utility’s devices, applications, and systems. The utility’s condition monitoring solution uses secure, two-way HTTPS communications. However, at remote sites where internet connectivity is often unavailable, a simple SMS protocol was created to run over this ever-reliable network.
Operational Impact
  • Achieved real-time remote asset condition monitoring
  • Delivered reliability for SMS and IP for data transmission
  • Ensured cost-effective cloud deployment
  • Improved responsiveness to malfunctions
Quantitative Benefit
  • Decreased operation costs by 50 percent
  • Outperformed in scalability to 9 million units
