Equinix has embraced a new generation of cloud services which allow them to enable their employees’ adoption of online tools quickly and easily, enhancing their job efficiency. However, the company was facing challenges in managing its Shadow IT cloud usage and enforcing security, compliance, and governance policies for Box.
The Challenge
Equinix, a technology company, was facing challenges in identifying the cloud services being used by its employees. The process of approving new cloud services was time-consuming, requiring about 30 person-hours of due diligence by a small staff of three security experts. The team had to manually verify security practices and assess risk factors, which was taxing. Additionally, they lacked tools to manage log files focusing on cloud services risks. The company needed a tool that could discover and identify all cloud services in use, reduce the time and cost of vetting cloud services, provide anomaly detection to spot behaviors that likely indicated data leakage, and prevent access to high-risk cloud services.
The Solution
Equinix leveraged Skyhigh’s Cloud Access Security Broker to discover the true scope of its cloud services footprint and make the lengthy approval process for new cloud services more efficient. Using Skyhigh, Equinix was able to discover all the cloud services in use and quickly assess their risk. This enabled Equinix to implement new services that supported various use cases for its business units. The company also used Skyhigh’s integration with their firewalls and proxies to serve just-in-time educational messages that coached users away from high-risk services to enterprise-sanctioned services, such as Box. With Shadow IT cloud usage effectively managed, they turned their focus to enforcing security, compliance and governance policies for their sanctioned services. By adding Skyhigh for Box into the IT portfolio, Equinix was able to ensure compliance with both internal policies and industry regulations.

In-vehicle communications and entertainment system hosts high-value or sensitive applications. API libraries facilitate communication and sharing of vehicle data. These API libraries are vulnerable to reverse engineering and tampering attacks and may even result in loss of passenger safety.
