About The Customer
Masana is a leading provider of petroleum solutions in South Africa. The organization represents part of BP’s BEE initiative in South Africa, and is 51% owned by BP. All Masana’s diesel and petroleum products are sourced from BP. The company provides petroleum products and solutions to various business-to-business sectors in South Africa, including the mining industry. Masana operates 11 depots and over 350 on-road filling stations.
The Challenge
Masana, a leading provider of petroleum solutions, was struggling with a manual and paper-based system for managing its Governance, Risk and Compliance universe. The company was facing issues with data loss, difficulty in collating data, and inability to track HSE incidents or actions related to the incidents. The data was scattered in many spreadsheets, and it was time-consuming to try collating data to build reports. The company needed a technology solution that could centralize their data, save time in creating detailed and accurate board reports, and allow their HSE team to conduct trend analysis and manage risks by exception.
The Solution
Masana implemented the IsoMetrix EHS Solution to replace their manual and paper-based systems. The Central Action Manager module in IsoMetrix was particularly beneficial for Masana. This module assigns actions to users in the system, ensuring the close-out of all tasks and processes. It also manages the process by which employees are held accountable for their responsible tasks. Actions and their progress are easily visible via the dashboards where they can be sorted by user and status. The system sends reminders of outstanding actions and manages escalations. The IsoMetrix EHS Solution allowed Masana to manage risk proactively by performing trend analyses and having a clear view of leading indicators.

Remote Wellhead Monitoring
Each wellhead was equipped with various sensors and meters that needed to be monitored and controlled from a central HMI, often miles away from the assets in the field. Redundant solar and wind generators were installed at each wellhead to support the electrical needs of the pumpstations, temperature meters, cameras, and cellular modules. In addition to asset management and remote control capabilities, data logging for remote surveillance and alarm notifications was a key demand from the customer. Terra Ferma’s solution needed to be power efficient, reliable, and capable of supporting high-bandwidth data-feeds. They needed a multi-link cellular connection to a central server that sustained reliable and redundant monitoring and control of flow meters, temperature sensors, power supply, and event-logging; including video and image files. This open-standard network needed to interface with the existing SCADA and proprietary network management software.

Refinery Saves Over $700,000 with Smart Wireless
One of the largest petroleum refineries in the world is equipped to refine various types of crude oil and manufacture various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel. Due to wear and tear, eight hydrogen valves in each refinery were leaking, and each cost $1800 per ton of hydrogen vented. The plant also had leakage on nearly 30 flare control hydrocarbon valves. The refinery wanted a continuous, online monitoring system that could catch leaks early, minimize hydrogen and hydrocarbon production losses, and improve safety for maintenance.
