About The Customer
The customer in this case study is Marty Rollinger, the Director of Flight Operations at a small, privately held company based in the United States. His role involves the supervision of all flight department activities, including scheduling, maintenance, training, security, and ensuring total customer satisfaction. He was tasked with the responsibility of ensuring the company's Dassault Falcon continued to have access to US airspace in 2020 amidst looming mandates.
The Challenge
Marty Rollinger, the Director of Flight Operations at a small, privately held company based in the United States, was faced with the challenge of ensuring the company's Dassault Falcon continued to have access to US airspace in 2020 amidst looming mandates. His role involved overseeing all flight department activities, including scheduling, maintenance, training, security, and customer satisfaction. The challenge was to find a comprehensive solution that would not only meet the mandates but also provide additional safety features for the aircraft.
The Solution
In response to the challenge, Marty partnered with Honeywell and Dassault Aviation to upgrade the aircraft's cockpit to the Primus Epic for Dassault EASy II. This solution made their aircraft mandate compliant and introduced new features that business jet pilots have long sought. The upgrades included the SmartView Synthetic Vision System (SVS), satellite-based augmentation system approaches (SBAS), Automatic Descent Mode, SmartRunway Runway Awareness and Advisory System (RAAS), Controller Pilot Data Link Communication (CPDLC), and Flight management system (FMS) improvements among others. Key benefits of the solution included increased communication functionality and capability crossing the Atlantic through CPDLC, enhanced ability to operate safely and efficiently to many additional runways through Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance (LPV), and compliance with the upcoming mandate through ADS-B Out.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the Primus Epic for Dassault EASy II resulted in enhanced operational safety and a significant improvement in aircraft efficiency. The SVS, Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS GPS), RAAS, and ADS-B Out are now being used in every flight, making the Primus Epic for Dassault EASy II integral to operating the aircraft. This has not only ensured compliance with the mandates but also introduced new features that have been beneficial to the business jet pilots.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Increased communication functionality and capability crossing the Atlantic through CPDLC
  • Enhanced ability to operate safely and efficiently to many additional runways through LPV
  • Compliance with the upcoming mandate through ADS-B Out
