About The Customer
Joseph Chamberlain Sixth Form College, founded in 1983, is a top-performing college located in Birmingham, United Kingdom. It is renowned for its high academic standards, achieving a 97% A-level pass rate in 2013, and is the only sixth form college in the UK to have won the prestigious Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education. The college serves a student body of 1,600-1,700 full-time students and is known for its innovative, technology-focused campus and core curriculum. JCC is independently governed and funded by the Government, offering a wide and diverse curriculum that includes A-level, BTEC, and vocational diplomas for both college-level and adult students. The college continues to push the envelope as a forward-thinking, innovative institution, catering to a large and diverse student population.
The Challenge
Joseph Chamberlain College (JCC) faced challenges with its aging and complex SAN and blade infrastructure, which was impacting performance for end users and demanding more effort from the IT staff. The college needed a high-performance, agile server and storage infrastructure to run all mission-critical workloads, including MS SQL and Exchange. The goal was to find a simple, easy-to-manage infrastructure that could support the school's innovative, technology-focused campus and core curriculum, while maintaining its reputation as a state-of-the-art, innovative sixth form college.
The Solution
Joseph Chamberlain College chose the Nutanix NX-3000 Series Virtual Computing Platform to address its infrastructure challenges. The Nutanix platform provided a complete, scalable solution for the college's private cloud infrastructure. Through testing and sizing exercises with the Nutanix team, JCC's IT Manager, Purdip Bahra, saw how easily Nutanix handled the high stress of its server workloads. The college decided to move forward with Nutanix as the chosen infrastructure for its entire datacenter, running every mission-critical workload on the NX-3000 platform. The Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform delivered on its promise of simple manageability and fast performance, allowing the JCC IT Services team to reduce the time needed to support the high demands of its SQL and Exchange environments by condensing all of the school's 32 server VMs onto a single, scalable platform.
Operational Impact
  • The Nutanix platform has significantly improved the end user experience at Joseph Chamberlain College, with a noticeable increase in positive feedback from students and faculty.
  • The college has achieved a 90% reduction in required datacenter rack space, replacing about 20U of infrastructure with just 2U of the Nutanix platform.
  • Nutanix's drastically lower power consumption figures have enhanced the college's green credentials, contributing to its reputation for sustainability.
  • The Nutanix support team has been quick and efficient, providing excellent service to the college.
  • The college is now more efficient and proactive with the Nutanix system in place, allowing the IT team to focus on strategic initiatives.
