The Challenge
Traditional paper notebooks are becoming obsolete, and digital note-taking is on the rise. However, a significant challenge with digital notes is that users often forget to revisit them, leading to important information being overlooked. Digital notes, while convenient, can become lost in a sea of text, making it difficult to extract actionable items, phone numbers, and calendar entries. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that digital notes are often stored in the cloud, making them 'out of sight, out of mind.' Tindr's CEO, Mike Kelland, recognized this issue and sought to develop a solution that would address the shortcomings of digital note-taking.
The Solution
Tindr developed Knowtaker, an application designed to address the challenges of digital note-taking. With support from the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) and leveraging AI technology from the University of Ottawa and NSERC, Knowtaker was created to automatically identify and extract significant phrases from digital notes. The application integrates with popular note-taking tools like Evernote, Google Keep, and Salesforce, and routes identified tasks to action systems such as Google Tasks or Remember the Milk. The user simply needs to connect their note-taking and action systems, and Knowtaker handles the rest. The application is built on the Akka Concurrency Framework, which allows it to efficiently process large amounts of data from numerous users. The Play Framework with Scala is used for the front end, providing scalability and flexibility for future feature additions.
