About The Customer
Larimer County is located in north-central Colorado and is the seventh largest county in the state based on population. It is home to Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado State University, and approximately 360,000 residents. The county government serves all residents and businesses through stewardship of numerous community resources, infrastructure improvement and maintenance, planning services, transparent public records, human and economic health initiatives, and broad community-wide public safety services. Larimer County employs approximately 2,000 people and is experiencing significant growth, necessitating technology that can grow with its workforce and better serve its citizens.
The Challenge
Larimer County, Colorado faced challenges with a disparate IT infrastructure that heavily relied on Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS), which was not sufficient for supporting the county’s cloud-based applications. This resulted in a hefty IT workload and frequent reboot services, making it difficult to serve residents efficiently and securely. The county needed a solution that could secure apps and servers across a hybrid environment, enable automated employee provisioning, and streamline employee access to all tools and services through a single digital front door using one username and password.
The Solution
Larimer County adopted Okta’s Workforce Identity Products to enable employees to access all cloud-based apps through a single digital front door, adding an extra layer of security and automating provisioning. This ensured that employees could securely access the tools they needed. The county also implemented Auth0’s flexible customer identity solution to extend industry-leading identity capabilities to its citizens, providing seamless access to county services via social media logins while centralizing authentication. The integration of Okta and Auth0 allowed Larimer County to streamline authentication and provisioning across its hybrid environment, enabling a seamless transition to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Operational Impact
  • Larimer County was able to integrate 35 applications with Okta in less than three weeks, significantly improving the efficiency of its IT operations.
  • The implementation of Okta Single Sign-On (SSO) reduced the number of helpdesk calls from employees, as they could seamlessly authenticate and access their applications.
  • The integration of Auth0 allowed citizens to use social media credentials for authentication, simplifying the login process and enhancing user experience.
  • The centralized IT infrastructure enabled Larimer County to quickly adapt to remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring employees could securely access necessary tools from home.
  • The county improved its security posture by implementing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and automating provisioning and deprovisioning processes, enhancing overall security and efficiency.
Quantitative Benefit
  • 2,200 employees across 28 county departments benefited from the enhanced digital services.
  • 1,200 citizens securely accessed services through social logins.
  • 35 applications were integrated with Okta in less than 3 weeks.
