About The Customer
Miguel 'Gorilla' Lopez is a seasoned artist, cartoonist, and animator who has worked on prime-time shows like The Simpsons, The Family Guy, and the current Warner Bros. hit The Xiaolin Showdown. He runs a two-person operation, Gorilla Enterprises, based in Los Angeles, California. Gorilla started his career as a designer and layout artist and has always used CorelDRAW to expedite his work. He has also worked as a Character Designer on several animated TV series from DIC Entertainment, Hyperion, Saban, etc. Currently, Gorilla and his business partner Megan are working on the Warner Bros. animated show Xiaolin Showdown.
The Challenge
Miguel 'Gorilla' Lopez, an experienced artist, cartoonist, and animator, faced the challenge of managing a two-person operation, Gorilla Enterprises, and competing with larger animation studios. The need for speed, efficiency, and quality in their work was paramount to keep up with the competition. The process of creating animations involved copying rough pencil drawings by hand with ink on high-quality paper, scanning them into the computer, and then creating vector illustrations. Ensuring line quality consistency across all scenes and making necessary adjustments was a time-consuming process. Additionally, creating animations required grouping and ungrouping various parts of characters, which was a complex task.
The Solution
Gorilla Enterprises adopted CorelDRAW as their primary tool for all their animation work. CorelDRAW's user-friendly interface and speed allowed them to outpace larger studios. The process of creating animations was streamlined by scanning the hand-drawn ink drawings into the computer and using CorelTRACE to create vector illustrations. Further fine-tuning was done in CorelDRAW, ensuring line quality consistency across all scenes. The software was also used to close gaps, ensure symmetry, and add color. CorelDRAW was also innovatively used as an animation tool. For animation sequences, new pages were added to the DRAW document they were working on, and by clicking on 'Next Page', they could flip the pages to see the movements, similar to flipping pages in a book. This made the process of creating animations quicker and more efficient.

The pumps requiring inspection are at a sub-assembly stage when they are due for the inspection process to take place. Due to the highly modular nature of the construction each part of the pump can have many different derivatives which overall have a different effect on the pump in industrial use. It is therefore critical for the manufacturing process to check all components are the correct type and number for the construction of the pump to begin. Once built it is difficult and costly to rework such units if a fault is detected later in the manufacturing process, therefore automated visual inspection is critical for the success in building quality motors and pumps.
