About The Customer
Melitta Europa GmbH & Co. KG is a renowned company with over a century of experience in producing and providing services that enhance everyday life. The company is best known for its invention of the first coffee filter paper by Melitta Bentz in 1908, which laid the foundation for its success as a family business. Today, Melitta operates in the coffee and tea sector, producing a variety of products including filter bags, coffee machines, tea filters, hoover bags, and plastic wraps. With production sites in Germany, the USA, and Brazil, Melitta is a global player in the consumer goods industry, committed to quality, innovation, and environmental sustainability. The company’s focus on these values has driven its continuous growth and adaptation to market needs.
The Challenge
Melitta Europa GmbH & Co. KG faced the challenge of maintaining high-quality production standards while ensuring competitiveness, environmental friendliness, and innovation in their manufacturing processes. The production of filter bags required a focus on these aspects to meet market demands and regulatory standards. Additionally, the company needed to streamline its production processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs. The existing systems were not sufficient to provide real-time data and insights necessary for optimizing production and maintenance schedules. This lack of real-time visibility into production operations and machine conditions posed a significant challenge in maintaining optimal production flow and minimizing downtime.
The Solution
To address the challenges, Melitta implemented the HYDRA MES solution by MPDV, which provided a comprehensive approach to managing their production processes. The solution included modules for Shop Floor Data, Machine Data, and Tool & Resource Management, which were integrated with their existing SAP system. This integration allowed for seamless planning and execution of production orders, with real-time data collection and analysis. Operators could log orders at data collection terminals, set up machines, and monitor production quantities directly connected to the system. The HYDRA MES automatically collected machine status and identified malfunctions, prompting operators to assign reasons for any issues from a predefined list. This standardized evaluation of machine times enabled better decision-making and process optimization. Additionally, the introduction of a maintenance calendar for tools, supported by automatic cycle collection, improved machine availability and reduced maintenance costs. The implementation of the HYDRA Energy Management module further enhanced the solution by enabling the collection and analysis of energy consumption data, facilitating energy efficiency improvements and maintenance cycle optimization.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of the HYDRA MES solution provided Melitta with real-time visibility into their production processes, allowing supervisors and production managers to quickly assess the current situation and previous shifts.
  • The standardized evaluation of machine times and automatic malfunction detection improved decision-making and process optimization, leading to increased machine availability.
  • The maintenance calendar for tools, supported by automatic cycle collection, allowed for targeted maintenance, reducing downtime and maintenance costs.
  • The integration of energy management capabilities enabled Melitta to gradually reduce energy consumption and optimize maintenance cycles based on energy usage data.
Quantitative Benefit
  • More than 30 machines connected to the HYDRA MES system.
  • 8 HYDRA Office Clients and 29 HYDRA Shop Floor Clients implemented.
