The Challenge
Mercer, a global consulting, outsourcing, and investments company, was looking for tools to improve the graphical capabilities of their dashboards. The existing in-house products were not keeping up with the times. The company was transitioning from a P&L-centric business to focusing more on clients and client profitability. This shift required dealing with a much larger dataset and providing leadership with a high-level view of the data, directing them where to focus. This need necessitated a more interactive, graphical tool rather than a simple PDF listing of information on a report.
The Solution
Mercer adopted Tableau for its data visualization needs. They started with a couple of desktop licenses and began building standalone dashboards to demonstrate the product's capabilities to senior executives. As interest grew, they rapidly expanded from a few desktop licenses to rolling out secured dashboards to 300 top leaders of the firm within a year or two. They evolved from a desktop view to a server view and started to push analyses out to the server. One of the early tools they built using Tableau was a productivity analysis tool that allowed business leaders to go from a business total view of utilization down to individual employees within three clicks. This tool provided a holistic view of what was happening at a high level all the way into the details.
