About The Customer
Geomatikk Survey is a Norwegian survey company specializing in advanced surveying technologies. They provide services to various industries, including energy companies, to help with precise measurements and adjustments of infrastructure projects. The company is known for its innovative approach to surveying, utilizing cutting-edge technology to deliver accurate and efficient results. In this case, Geomatikk Survey was commissioned by BKK Enotek, an energy company, to measure and adjust the sag of power lines in a challenging mountainous region. Their expertise in using advanced total station technology allowed them to redefine traditional surveying methods and offer real-time solutions that enhanced project efficiency and opened new business opportunities.
The Challenge
In Norway’s Sogn og Fjordane County, energy companies faced challenges with traditional survey methods for adjusting the sag of newly constructed power lines, especially in the mountainous terrain of Leikanger. The landscape and long spans made it difficult to use conventional techniques, which often required several days to complete. Geomatikk Survey was tasked with measuring and adjusting the sag of a new 450-meter section of power lines installed by BKK Enotek. The initial plan was to use the Trimble SX10 scanning total station to acquire measurements and process the data in the office. However, the discovery that the SX10 could automatically lock onto the power lines without a prism allowed for real-time adjustments directly in the field, significantly reducing the project timeline.
The Solution
Geomatikk Survey utilized the Trimble SX10 scanning total station and Trimble R10 GNSS system to establish project control and measure the sag of power lines in real-time. By aiming the SX10 directly at the power lines, the team could lock onto the cables without a prism, allowing for immediate adjustments in the field. This real-time capability enabled the survey team to guide the tensioning crew remotely, ensuring the lines were adjusted to the correct sag specifications. Additionally, the team conducted scans of the power lines to provide detailed 3D documentation to their client, BKK Enotek. The integration of point cloud and survey data using Trimble Business Center software allowed for a quick turnaround in producing a vector-based report to verify the adjustments.
Operational Impact
  • The use of real-time surveying technology allowed Geomatikk Survey to complete the power line adjustment project in a single day, significantly reducing the time required compared to traditional methods.
  • The ability to adjust the power lines in real-time directly in the field enhanced the accuracy and efficiency of the project, leading to increased customer satisfaction.
  • The successful implementation of the Trimble SX10 scanning total station opened new business opportunities for Geomatikk Survey, as they were commissioned for additional projects by BKK Enotek.
  • The detailed 3D documentation provided to the client demonstrated the capabilities of the new technology and served as a valuable business development tool for Geomatikk Survey.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The project timeline was reduced from several days to just one day, showcasing a significant improvement in efficiency.
  • The Trimble SX10 scanning total station collected 26,600 points per second during the scanning process, with each scan taking about 10 minutes to complete.
