About The Customer
PEO Aviation is the Program Executive Office for Aviation in the U.S. Army. The organization is responsible for the procurement, production, support, and management of the Army’s aviation assets, including helicopters like the Apache, Chinook, Black Hawk, Lakota, and Armed Scout, as well as fixed-wing aircraft and unmanned aircraft systems. PEO Aviation plays a crucial role in ensuring that the U.S. Army's aviation capabilities are maintained and enhanced to meet operational demands. The organization is a large corporate entity within the defense sector, tasked with overseeing complex and critical aviation programs that are vital to national security.
The Challenge
PEO Aviation needed a high-performance, easy-to-manage server and storage infrastructure to support a production VDI deployment. The existing infrastructure, which included Dell half-height blade servers, an EMC Celerra storage array, and a Fibre Channel SAN, was insufficient for supporting a large number of users. The IT department was tasked with finding faster hardware that could effectively support a VDI environment. They considered various options, including Fusion-io PCIe flash memory cards, new Dell blade servers with an EMC VNX storage array, and a Vblock integrated system from Cisco and EMC. However, these solutions either lacked high availability with failover or were difficult to manage due to the lengthy and unpredictable federal procurement process.
The Solution
PEO Aviation chose the Nutanix Virtual Computing Platform (NX-2000) for its VDI deployment. The Nutanix platform stood out due to its high throughput, ease of management, and ability to support a large number of virtual desktops. The platform's converged storage and compute architecture allowed for easy expansion of virtual desktops as needed. Each Nutanix node or block supports a deterministic number of desktops, simplifying the procurement and deployment process. The Nutanix platform also incorporates Fusion-io cards, solid-state drives, and automated data tiering to deliver the IOPS performance required for VDI. The deployment of two Nutanix NX-2000 Complete Blocks running VMware Horizon View significantly reduced setup time and improved data security by containing data within the datacenter.
Operational Impact
  • The Nutanix platform provided easy management without the need for a SAN or storage administrator.
  • Performance improved significantly, with faster logon times and administrative tasks.
  • The converged server and storage platform simplified handling and avoided lengthy federal procurement cycles.
  • The platform supported more than 100 virtual desktops, with plans to virtualize 40-80% of PEO Aviation's 3500 desktop users.
  • Nutanix technical support was highly responsive and helpful, even advising on configuring Horizon View.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Installation time reduced to 45 minutes compared to half a day with old infrastructure.
  • Nutanix platform is nearly 90% more space efficient, requiring only 4U of rack space compared to 34U for traditional solutions.
