About The Customer
Options is a global leader in financial technology managed services, known for its world-class infrastructure and support for business scalability and new technology. Founded in 1993 as a hedge fund technology services provider, Options transitioned to offering cloud services to the financial sector over a decade ago. Today, it serves over 200 firms globally, including leading global investment banks, hedge funds, proprietary trading firms, private equity houses, and exchanges. Options' platform is built to investment bank standards, offering transparency in pricing, 24×7 support, and strong account management. The company operates in over 20 countries with seven offices worldwide, transferring over 400Tb of data daily to facilitate deals worth billions of dollars.
The Challenge
Options needed to reduce latency and stop packet loss as part of its managed services offering to over 200 leading financial institutions. The company provides a managed colocation and proximity services platform that gives customers access to all the key liquidity centres globally across all asset classes. With growing traffic volumes and increasing demand for ultra-low latency, Options faced issues with packet dropping and unacceptable levels of latency. The existing switch series was reaching end-of-life, prompting the need for replacement switching technologies.
The Solution
Options evaluated several vendors and set up a test-bed to benchmark replacement switches. The Arista 7150 Family Switches were chosen for their performance boost and latency reduction. The move to Arista allowed Options to re-evaluate its architecture, taking advantage of features like buffer monitoring for better traffic flow visibility and proactive capacity planning. The Arista switches share the same Extensible Operating System (EOS), offering resiliency and programmability. Options initially rolled out the new switches at key co-location datacentres, seeing significant latency improvements. The higher density of Arista switches allowed for reduced rack space, power consumption, and cooling costs. Over 24 months, Options replaced legacy switches at 15 data centres with Arista 7000 series switches, offering ultra-low latency switching technology. The deployment of the Arista 7280R series platform addressed high throughput and burst traffic demands. Options also utilized Arista Networks’ Latency Analyzer (LANZ) for real-time congestion visibility and piloted Arista CloudVision for workload orchestration and automation.
Operational Impact
  • Options achieved significant latency improvements, with latency dropping from 12-16ms to below 0.5ms on new Arista switches.
  • The higher density of Arista switches allowed Options to use less rack space, reducing power consumption, cooling, and rack rental charges.
  • The upgrade provided the fastest path routes with Arista ultra-low latency switching technology, offering sub-microsecond delivery in data centres.
  • Options gained more visibility over its network layer and enough headroom to grow its service offering in line with demand.
  • The support model provided by Arista offered rapid response rates for bug fixes and additional automation and scripting benefits.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Latency dropped from 20ms to below 0.5ms on certain connections.
  • Roundtrip latency on certain routes reduced from 90ms to below 10ms.
  • Consolidation from 15u to 2u racks reduced power consumption, cooling, and rental charges.
