About The Customer
Oregon State University (OSU) is a prominent educational institution in the United States, known for its comprehensive research and community engagement. It is one of only two U.S. universities designated as a land-, sea-, space-, and sun-grant institution. OSU is also the only university in Oregon to hold both the Carnegie Foundation’s top designation for research institutions and its prestigious Community Engagement classification. With over 26,000 students from all 50 states and more than 90 nations, OSU is committed to providing a top-notch education experience. The university emphasizes teaching students the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate today’s changing and challenging environment while embracing diversity in local and global communities. As part of its mission, OSU continuously seeks to adopt innovations that enhance accessibility and inclusivity for all students, staff, and visitors.
The Challenge
Oregon State University faced the challenge of managing a limited number of ADA parking spaces on campus. The university needed to ensure that there were enough ADA spaces available at all times and that individuals in need of these spaces could find and access them quickly and easily. This was part of their broader goal to adopt innovations that make the campus more accessible to students and staff with disabilities. Despite being ranked highly for web accessibility, managing physical accessibility through parking remained a constant challenge. The university sought a solution that would not only improve the management of these spaces but also enhance the overall parking experience for all users, including students, visitors, faculty, and staff.
The Solution
Oregon State University collaborated with Streetline to implement a comprehensive smart parking solution. This solution included several of Streetline’s products: ParkSight™, ParkEdge™, Parker™, and ParkerMap™. The university identified and equipped 75 ADA parking spaces across the campus with Streetline’s patented vehicle detection sensors. These sensors provided real-time data on the availability of these spaces, which was then communicated to motorists through the Parker app and ParkerMap. This system allowed users to easily find available ADA spaces and plan their parking accordingly. Additionally, the data collected from these sensors was made available to the university’s Department of Disability Access Services and the Department of Transit and Parking Services. This data included metrics such as occupancy, turnover, demand, and duration of stay, enabling the university to make informed decisions about future parking policies and space allocation. The ParkEdge platform further enhanced the solution by allowing the university to update parking facility information in real-time, ensuring that all users had access to the most current information regarding rates, hours, and restrictions.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Streetline’s smart parking solution allowed OSU to provide a seamless parking experience for motorists requiring ADA spaces. The Parker app and ParkerMap effectively guided users to available parking spaces, improving accessibility and convenience.
  • The university received positive feedback from the program, with many department websites integrating ParkerMap to highlight parking locations relative to their offices and buildings.
  • The data-driven insights gained from the solution enabled OSU to better plan for the future addition, reduction, or redistribution of ADA spaces across the campus, ensuring optimal space utilization and accessibility.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Instrumented 75 ADA spaces with vehicle detection sensors.
  • Served 30 different buildings with the smart parking system.
