About The Customer
Pure Energy Services Ltd. is an oilfield services company specializing in well completion and abandonment services for oil and gas exploration and development entities. Operating primarily in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and certain regions of the United States, Pure Energy is known for its expertise in servicing shale plays using advanced drilling and completion technologies, including hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques. In October 2012, Pure Energy was acquired by FMC Technologies, Inc. The company is headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, and employs approximately 1,400 people, with the majority working in the field.
The Challenge
Pure Energy Services, a leading provider of hydraulic fracturing flowback services, faced a significant challenge in maintaining secure and efficient operations as 90% of its 1,400 employees worked in the field across North America's challenging terrains. The company needed a secure, compliant, and reliable enterprise SSO platform to streamline operations and integrate with both SaaS and on-premises applications. With a small IT department, the solution had to be easy to implement and maintain, while also being mobile-friendly and reliable to minimize costly downtime.
The Solution
Pure Energy selected PingFederate to provide a secure and compliant SSO infrastructure for its SaaS and on-premises applications. The solution was implemented in two phases, with Phase 1 involving the setup of PingFederate and SSO-enabling Google Apps, MyPureHub, FIRE Online, and Pure Energy's LMS application. Phase 2, completed in just 12 hours, involved setting up OAuth 2.0 and integrating the FIRE Unplugged mobile app into PingFederate. The implementation was praised for its ease and speed, with Ping Identity's integration kits and technology skill set playing a crucial role in the successful deployment.

Taking Oil and Gas Exploration to the Next Level

Remote Wellhead Monitoring
Each wellhead was equipped with various sensors and meters that needed to be monitored and controlled from a central HMI, often miles away from the assets in the field. Redundant solar and wind generators were installed at each wellhead to support the electrical needs of the pumpstations, temperature meters, cameras, and cellular modules. In addition to asset management and remote control capabilities, data logging for remote surveillance and alarm notifications was a key demand from the customer. Terra Ferma’s solution needed to be power efficient, reliable, and capable of supporting high-bandwidth data-feeds. They needed a multi-link cellular connection to a central server that sustained reliable and redundant monitoring and control of flow meters, temperature sensors, power supply, and event-logging; including video and image files. This open-standard network needed to interface with the existing SCADA and proprietary network management software.

Refinery Saves Over $700,000 with Smart Wireless
One of the largest petroleum refineries in the world is equipped to refine various types of crude oil and manufacture various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel. Due to wear and tear, eight hydrogen valves in each refinery were leaking, and each cost $1800 per ton of hydrogen vented. The plant also had leakage on nearly 30 flare control hydrocarbon valves. The refinery wanted a continuous, online monitoring system that could catch leaks early, minimize hydrogen and hydrocarbon production losses, and improve safety for maintenance.
