Super Retail Group is one of the largest leisure retailers in Australia, with more than $2 billion in annual sales. Founded in 1972 as a small auto parts business, the company has grown exponentially through a series of strategic acquisitions. By 2011, it was managing seven distinct supply chains, which spanned from sourcing in Asia to distribution in Australia and New Zealand. The company operates each brand as a separate division, adding to the complexity of its supply chain. The vast, sparsely populated geography of Australia adds another layer of difficulty to Super Retail Group’s supply chains.
The Challenge
Super Retail Group, a leading leisure retailer in Australia, faced significant supply chain complexity due to its rapid growth through strategic acquisitions. By 2011, the company was managing seven distinct supply chains, spanning from sourcing in Asia to distribution in Australia and New Zealand. The vast geography of Australia added another layer of difficulty, making cost optimization per unit and movement critical. Additionally, the company started adding more soft goods, which have different demand patterns than hard goods. The retailer needed a forecasting and replenishment solution that could handle its geographic difficulty, as well as the stock-keeping unit (SKU) complexity and demand variation across its seven retail brands. To overcome these challenges, Super Retail Group committed to investing more than $50 million in supply chain and inventory management improvements over three years.
The Solution
Super Retail Group implemented Blue Yonder's integrated forecasting and replenishment solutions via a cloud deployment. The cloud environment sped up implementation, minimized risks, and reduced financial investment. One of the benefits of working with Blue Yonder cloud services was the ability to conduct a pilot. The cloud enabled Super Retail Group to easily set up the infrastructure, conduct a pilot, and see results. The success of the pilot enabled Super Retail Group to create a business case for moving forward with a single demand and fulfillment system, operating in a cloud environment. The cloud services model proved to be scalable across the company's enormous product diversity and very reliable, with uptime near 100 percent, a critical factor given the large amount of data the retailer needs to move into Blue Yonder’s applications.

Ensures Cold Milk in Your Supermarket
As of 2014, AK-Centralen has over 1,500 Danish supermarkets equipped, and utilizes 16 operators, and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. AK-Centralen needed the ability to monitor the cooling alarms from around the country, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each and every time the door to a milk cooler or a freezer does not close properly, an alarm goes off on a computer screen in a control building in southwestern Odense. This type of alarm will go off approximately 140,000 times per year, equating to roughly 400 alarms in a 24-hour period. Should an alarm go off, then there is only a limited amount of time to act before dairy products or frozen pizza must be disposed of, and this type of waste can quickly start to cost a supermarket a great deal of money.

Supermarket Energy Savings
The client had previously deployed a one-meter-per-store monitoring program. Given the manner in which energy consumption changes with external temperature, hour of the day, day of week and month of year, a single meter solution lacked the ability to detect the difference between a true problem and a changing store environment. Most importantly, a single meter solution could never identify root cause of energy consumption changes. This approach never reduced the number of truck-rolls or man-hours required to find and resolve issues.
