About The Customer
The customer in this case is the Starlight Express, a musical theatre production in Bochum, Germany. It is the longest-running musical theatre production in the country and is known for its unique performance style, with a 40-strong roller skating cast utilizing the entire room for the performance. The production is housed in a purpose-built venue specially designed for the show. As the production hit its 30th anniversary, the owners sought to update the production with a new sonic concept to provide the audience with the most immersive audio experience possible.
The Challenge
The challenge was to update Germany’s longest-running musical theatre production, Starlight Express, to provide the audience with the most immersive audio experience possible. The Starlight Express runs in a purpose-built venue specially designed for the show, and the 40-strong roller skating cast utilizes the entire room for the performance. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s vision was to deliver maximum separation of the instruments, which led the team to explore an immersive sound concept early on for the show’s update. The complexity of the task was amplified by the need to ensure the best results for all parties involved.
The Solution
Internationally renowned sound designer Gareth Owen and his team at Gareth Owen Sound were tasked with updating the production with a new sonic concept. They turned to Avid VENUE | S6L driving a d&b Soundscape system to transform Starlight Express into a groundbreaking audio production. Gareth's long relationship with speaker system company d&b audiotechnik sped up the design phase and resulted in choosing a d&b Soundscape immersive PA system for the Bochum Theater. The complex immersive system was driven from a mixing desk, and for Gareth, there was no question that it had to be an Avid VENUE | S6L. With the S6L Unified Live Sound Platform, he had more flexibility than ever to configure the ideal system for each production—even swapping consoles for different phases of the project—with 100% hardware, software, and show file compatibility.

Implementing Robotic Surgery Training Simulator for Enhanced Surgical Proficiency
Fundacio Puigvert, a leading European medical center specializing in Urology, Nephrology, and Andrology, faced a significant challenge in training its surgical residents. The institution recognized the need for a more standardized and comprehensive training curriculum, particularly in the area of robotic surgery. The challenge was underscored by two independent studies showing that less than 5% of residents in Italian and German residency programs could perform major or complex procedures by the end of their residency. The institution sought to establish a virtual reality simulation lab that would include endourological, laparoscopic, and robotic platforms. However, they needed a simulator that could replicate both the hardware and software of the robotic Da Vinci console used in the operating room, without being connected to the actual physical console. They also required a system that could provide both basic and advanced simulation training, and a metrics system to assess the proficiency of the trainees before they performed surgical procedures in the operating theater.

VR Solution Development for Training Simulation in American Football
SportsVTS, a US-based company that creates simulated reality training experiences, aimed to develop a VR solution that would enable players to minimize the injury risk and maximize their performance by training in virtual reality. The primary business goal was to create a realistic training simulation to enable a quarterback to master various techniques within a controlled environment and improve his playing ability without the risk of injury. The challenges included developing an AI component to maximize user experience realism, using full-body 3D scan for highly-detailed and hyper-realistic character models, applying corrective BlendShapes for recreating the player’s skeleton and body, using Locomotion Extend System to allow the player to access any part of the field smoothly, developing the character customization system based on real NFL players, tracing the ball trajectory to re-create it with maximum accuracy, integrating the experience with VR hardware, and developing functionality for setting 21 other players on the field.
