The Customer
About The Customer
Sharktech's customers are primarily small and medium-sized businesses, including many VPN and game service providers across the U.S., Europe, and China. These customers value Sharktech's service quality, network expertise, DDoS mitigation, and high-quality support. With the introduction of cloud services, Sharktech aims to provide an open and customer-friendly platform that is also cost-effective. The open-source nature of the platform is particularly important to Sharktech's customers, as it helps maintain their loyalty to Sharktech's service.
The Challenge
Sharktech, a hosting provider with a 20-year history, had built a reputation for its service quality, network expertise, DDoS mitigation, and high-quality support. The company, headquartered in Las Vegas, offers a range of hosting services from datacenters in Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, and Amsterdam. Its clientele mainly consists of small and medium-sized businesses, including many VPN and game service providers across the U.S., Europe, and China. Despite the prevalence of cloud services, Sharktech had not ventured into this domain until 2019. The delay was due to the company's stringent requirements for performance, reliability, and support, which they felt were not met by the existing cloud platform alternatives.
The Solution
After considering building its own cloud with OpenStack and testing several other cloud platforms, Sharktech chose Virtuozzo as the only provider that met its stringent requirements. The company has now deployed Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure, a full-stack cloud services platform, at its datacenters in L.A. and Denver, with plans to expand to Chicago and Amsterdam. The choice of Virtuozzo was also influenced by its basis on OpenStack, the industry-standard open-source cloud framework. This allows Sharktech to offer cloud services that are open, customer-friendly, and cost-effective, providing a compelling alternative to hyperscale clouds.
Operational Impact
  • The deployment of Virtuozzo Hybrid Infrastructure has allowed Sharktech to venture into cloud services for the first time, expanding its service offerings. The platform's basis on OpenStack, an industry-standard open-source cloud framework, enables Sharktech to provide a more open and customer-friendly cloud service. This is a significant operational benefit as it not only enhances the company's service portfolio but also helps retain customer loyalty. Furthermore, the open-source nature of the platform provides a cost-effective alternative to hyperscale clouds, which is a key selling point for Sharktech's customers.
