The Challenge

The challenge faced by the National Accounts team was the need for a BI solution that could help identify anomalies in the data, which might indicate flaws in coding that could be corrected. An international tender was conducted to find a suitable solution, and the Pyramid Platform, specifically the BI Office, was selected due to its functionality, usability, and cost-effectiveness. The investment proved successful, leading to continued use of Pyramid through version updates and new product iterations.
The Solution
Statistics Finland opted for 100 user licenses for the Pyramid Decision Intelligence Platform, divided between administrators and statisticians. The platform is used to validate work, analyze data for errors and unexpected variations, and identify sources of imbalance. Errors exposed by Pyramid prompt micro-level corrections at the data source or a re-evaluation of methods used earlier in the pipeline. The platform enables statisticians to identify unusual numbers in a subset of a larger data set, such as a small sector of businesses from a large industry database. When an anomaly is detected, statisticians can check the original data or the model used to process the data to determine if coding mistakes explain the outlier. The use of the Pyramid platform has encouraged ongoing dialogue between statisticians and administrators, with the goal of continually improving the accuracy of published data. Statisticians can request new discovery views that allow them to compare statistics automatically, side-by-side with visual representations, rather than manually dissecting numbers in spreadsheets. The platform's flexibility and intuitive user interface have been significant benefits, allowing statisticians to track various statistics and how they change over different dimensions. The ability to mix and match data sources has made daily tasks faster and easier. Vendor support from Pyramid has been pivotal, with quick responses to new requirements and improvements in formatting tools with each version update.
