About The Customer
Insurance Australia Group (IAG) is a leading insurance company in Australia, known for its commitment to innovation and customer service. The company operates in a highly competitive industry where data-driven decision-making is crucial for success. IAG has a large and diverse customer base, and it continuously seeks to improve its services and offerings through technological advancements. The company has a strong focus on leveraging open-source technologies to enhance its operations and deliver value to its customers. IAG's data team plays a pivotal role in driving the company's digital transformation initiatives, focusing on real-time data processing and analytics to support various business functions such as pricing, customer service, marketing, and analytics.
The Challenge
The Insurance Australia Group (IAG) faced the challenge of transforming its data architecture to enable real-time data processing and integration. The existing infrastructure was not capable of supporting the rapid development and deployment of data products, which was necessary to improve internal operations and customer interactions. Additionally, IAG needed a solution that could enhance performance metrics and facilitate the delivery of open-source software solutions. The organization also aimed to contribute to the open-source community by sharing its innovations and solutions.
The Solution
IAG implemented OpenStack to transform its data architecture, enabling real-time data processing and continuous integration. This solution allowed the company to build and deploy data products rapidly, significantly reducing the time from months to days. The integration with GitHub facilitated pair programming and peer review, ensuring high-quality data and analytics products. OpenStack also improved IAG's performance metrics and enabled new ways to deliver open-source software solutions. The deployment included three separate tenants: pre-production, production, and analytics, each optimized for different workloads. The analytics tenant, for instance, consisted of 12 servers with high-performance and archival storage, leveraging the commercial ScaleIO SDS solution. This setup provided four times the performance at one-fifth the cost compared to the previous VMWare environment.
