About The Customer
M.J. Eriksson A/S is a prominent Danish contractor involved in various construction projects across Denmark. Founded in 1945, the company has grown to employ over 600 people and is known for its work in infrastructure, energy, environment, and climate adaptation projects. M.J. Eriksson is committed to developing and expanding Denmark through its construction endeavors, which include building highways, bridges, and other critical infrastructure. The company is recognized for its ability to handle large-scale projects and its focus on integrating advanced technologies to improve efficiency and outcomes. With a long-standing reputation in the industry, M.J. Eriksson continues to play a vital role in shaping Denmark's infrastructure landscape.
The Challenge
Danish contractor M.J. Eriksson was tasked with constructing a new highway, including a bridge across the Roskilde Fjord in Denmark. The project required precise grading to meet design specifications, which was challenging due to the varying experience levels of the operators involved. The company wanted to evaluate the productivity and accuracy improvements that could be achieved using Trimble Earthworks Grade Control Platform with excavator automatics. The challenge was to ensure that both experienced and less experienced operators could achieve the required grading accuracy and productivity, thereby reducing time and costs associated with the project.
The Solution
M.J. Eriksson implemented the Trimble Earthworks Grade Control Platform for Excavators to enhance grading accuracy and productivity. This platform is the first integrated 3D aftermarket grade control system with excavator automatics capabilities. It features intuitive software that is customizable, allowing operators to personalize the interface to maximize productivity regardless of their experience level. In 'Autos' mode, the operator controls the stick while Trimble Earthworks manages the boom and bucket to maintain grade, automating the excavator operation. This automation enables operators to achieve consistent grading with high accuracy in less time. The system was tested on a Cat 329 E excavator by two operators with different experience levels. The experienced operator achieved a 41% increase in speed and a 75% improvement in accuracy, while the beginner/intermediate operator saw a 28% increase in speed and a 100% improvement in accuracy. These results demonstrate the platform's effectiveness in enhancing operator performance and project outcomes.
Operational Impact
  • Operators of varying experience levels achieved improved grading productivity and accuracy using Trimble Earthworks.
  • The system allowed less experienced operators to complete tasks with greater accuracy and confidence.
  • The automation feature of Trimble Earthworks enabled consistent grading, reducing time and costs on the job site.
  • The platform's intuitive and customizable interface contributed to maximizing operator productivity.
  • The use of Trimble Earthworks demonstrated significant improvements in project workflow and operator efficiency.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Experienced operator was 41% faster with a 75% increase in accuracy using Trimble automatics.
  • Beginner/intermediate operator was 28% faster with a 100% increase in accuracy using Trimble automatics.
