About The Customer
Toshiba is a global technology company that needed to build the next generation of its TCx™ Sky retail optimized operating system. The system is designed to provide stability, security, and performance for today’s widely distributed POS systems and also serve as a foundation for emerging IoT innovations. Toshiba's customer base is diverse, necessitating the constant release of new products to keep up with the latest silicon and security features. The company needed a technology partner to help it keep up with the constant evolution and security monitoring associated with embedded Linux deployments.
The Challenge
Toshiba was faced with the challenge of building the next generation of its TCx™ Sky retail optimized operating system. The new system needed to provide stability, security, and performance for today’s widely distributed Point of Sale (POS) systems and also serve as a foundation for emerging IoT innovations such as biometrics and anonymous facial recognition. With TCx Sky powering over a million checkout lines and running a streamlined embedded Linux kernel suitable for retail applications, Toshiba needed a technology partner to help it keep up with the constant evolution and security monitoring associated with embedded Linux deployments. The challenge was further compounded by Toshiba's diverse customer base, which necessitated the constant release of new products to keep up with the latest silicon and security features.
The Solution
Toshiba selected Wind River for its deep expertise with carrier grade and embedded Linux. Wind River Linux addressed the development and deployment needs of a secure, supported, and constantly evolving Linux platform for global retailers. Toshiba used a customized Wind River Linux–based platform and relied on customer content management services to control lifecycle and maintenance. Wind River partnered with Toshiba to create TCx™ Sky, helping select the packages, the tools, and the customizations needed for a hardened carrier grade platform. The company also assisted Toshiba in the constant security monitoring that protects the platform and its users. Two months after the new kernel was finalized, Wind River had integrated the new kernel into the Wind Linux Continuous Delivery (CD) release.
