About The Customer
World Oil Corp is a significant player in the petroleum industry, with operations spanning recycling, production, and transportation of vital petroleum products. The company also provides crucial environmental services in California and throughout the western United States. As a company dealing with hazardous waste, World Oil Corp is subject to stringent regulations and compliance requirements. In 2018, the company faced a significant challenge when the Federal EPA mandated the submission of all hazardous waste manifests through the RCRAInfo site. This requirement, coupled with a backlog of thousands of manifests, put World Oil Corp in a time-sensitive situation that required a swift and efficient solution.
The Challenge
World Oil Corp, a company that recycles, produces, and transports vital petroleum products and provides important environmental services in California and throughout the western United States, faced a significant challenge in 2018. The Federal EPA introduced a requirement that all hazardous waste manifests be submitted through the RCRAInfo site. This transition to the online database came with hefty fees for manifests submitted via mail or as a scanned image. World Oil found itself in a time crunch situation, needing a technology partner that could process their thousands of backlogged manifests to meet the EPA deadline. The company was at risk of incurring substantial costs and potential penalty payments from the EPA if they failed to meet the deadline.
The Solution
Wastebits, a nationally recognized software development and data analytics company that specializes in cloud-based solutions for the waste industry, provided the solution to World Oil's challenge. Wastebits' e-Manifest solution formats customer's manifest data for the lowest possible fees from the EPA. The company was able to submit thousands of manifests per day via data + image upload or as scanned image-only files. For World Oil specifically, Wastebits processed a large backlog of manifests from before the September 31, 2018 deadline, saving costs and preventing penalty payments from the EPA. Wastebits also provided a thorough review of each manifest for any missing or illegible fields. Through proprietary technology, Wastebits was able to catch mistakes before the manifest was ever sent to the EPA, creating administrative efficiencies, improving data quality, and simplifying workflow.

Remote Wellhead Monitoring
Each wellhead was equipped with various sensors and meters that needed to be monitored and controlled from a central HMI, often miles away from the assets in the field. Redundant solar and wind generators were installed at each wellhead to support the electrical needs of the pumpstations, temperature meters, cameras, and cellular modules. In addition to asset management and remote control capabilities, data logging for remote surveillance and alarm notifications was a key demand from the customer. Terra Ferma’s solution needed to be power efficient, reliable, and capable of supporting high-bandwidth data-feeds. They needed a multi-link cellular connection to a central server that sustained reliable and redundant monitoring and control of flow meters, temperature sensors, power supply, and event-logging; including video and image files. This open-standard network needed to interface with the existing SCADA and proprietary network management software.

Refinery Saves Over $700,000 with Smart Wireless
One of the largest petroleum refineries in the world is equipped to refine various types of crude oil and manufacture various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel. Due to wear and tear, eight hydrogen valves in each refinery were leaking, and each cost $1800 per ton of hydrogen vented. The plant also had leakage on nearly 30 flare control hydrocarbon valves. The refinery wanted a continuous, online monitoring system that could catch leaks early, minimize hydrogen and hydrocarbon production losses, and improve safety for maintenance.
