Reduce the Energy Consumption of Air Cooled Condensers
Altiux's client organization is at the forefront of technology adoption in its manufacturing processes and had already implemented advanced control systems. However operating expenses still remained on the higher side due to inefficiencies in certain processes which required manual intervention. The challenge for Altiux was to understand the nature and root causes of these inefficiencies and make recommendations for reducing the operating expenses. Our observation was that data was being generated with a millisecond level resolution and hundreds of simultaneous fluctuations made it near impossible for the operators to make optimal control decisions consistently. As significant investments had already been made in the instrumentation of the operational equipment, the management was hesitant to make modifications to existing systems and processes. Altiux was asked to make recommendations such that it could blend in with existing processes and additional capital expenditure or staff retraining was not required. The Air Cooled Condenser system at the client's captive power plant was operated using a series of VFD fans. The rotational speed of these fans were being manually set from the control centre, based upon the experience of the operator. Moreover the fans were being operated in different speeds, with fans closer to the turbine operating at near full speed. Thus the first phase of Altiux engagement involved optimization of the captive power plant's steam cooling subsystem.

Connecting Cows to Save the Lives of Calves with MooCall
The idea for the Moocall calving sensor came about when one of the Moocall founding team, Niall Austin lost a heifer and her calf due to a difficult calving back in 2010. He had a theory that a device to measure tail movement might be able to predict the onset of calving and brought the idea to the other Moocall founders Michael Stanley and Emmet Savage. After many months of research and development the MooCall device was born, however they needed robust and reliable, global connectivity with roaming capability to ensure that this critical data could be transferred the crucial moment. Vodafone IoT worked closely with MooCall to implement a solution that works seamlessly every time, wherever the cow might be situated.

Refrigeration Plant in Climatic Wind Tunnel
Johnson Controls has advised Jaguar Land Rover on matters relating to the service, maintenance and repair of the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems installed at the Gaydon Centre for almost 20 years. In 2012 we were invited to submit a proposal for replacement of the evaporator installed in the Climatic Wind Tunnel. In a ‘Site Survey Report’ submitted to Jaguar Land Rover, we drew their attention to the key factors that we believed were behind the evaporator’s less then optimum level of performance. The bulk of these stemmed from the fact that the existing evaporator was over 20 years old and throughout its working life a number of design changes had been made to the overall system that it formed a part of, thus rendering it no longer fit for purpose. Examples of such key factors included: • The old evaporator’s level of performance was now too ‘industrial’. It was capable of operating within a temperature range of -40°C and +55°C, while projected requirements were for a temperature range of between -10°C and +50°C. • Our concerns were raised over the suitability of the existing heat transfer fluid being used, which was proving to be highly corrosive. • The old evaporator was still operating on the soon to be banned R22 refrigerant. The use of all HCFCs for the service and maintenance of HVAC&R systems will become a criminal offence from 1st January 2015.

Field Device Asset Management For Chemical Company in China
Chinese chemical subsidiary of multinational corporation serves customers throughout the world. Sales offices and research and technology centers are strategically located to provide rapid response to customer requests. Just two workers were assigned to maintain thousands of intelligent instruments in three production units, so they could do little more than react to device issues as they appeared. This costly maintenance method inevitably led to unexpected downtime when a critical instrument failed. Plant management recognized the need to change from reactive to predictive maintenance for all assets, including instruments and control valves, but help was needed in implementing such a technology-based initiative.

IIC Communication & Control Testbed for Microgrid Applications
Traditional central-station power grids operate on 15-minute output update cycles that force operators to over-generate power to compensate for potential blackouts or unexpected new power demands on the grid. Additionally, they cannot efficiently utilize the distributed, dynamic generation of renewable power sources such as solar panels or wind turbines.

Maximizing Error-proofing in Manufacturing with MES/MOM Controlled Assembly Tools
This document summarizes the error-proofing solution a leading heavy machinery manufacturer implemented and standardized on in order to greatly reduce product defects due to improperly fastened bolts in transmission systems. Electric assembly tools called nutrunners are used by assembly line workers to fasten bolts to a predetermined torque measurement. Their decision to implement a manufacturing execution system (MES) or manufacturing operations management (MOM) software to both ‘monitor’ and ‘control’ all aspects of the assembly tools and line worker processes yielded unprecedented results by reducing bolted joint failures and Warranty claims by 94%.

Island-wide Smart Grid Network (N.V. Elmar)
N.V. Elmar had initiated a project to implement a smart grid network across the entire island. The enhanced grid would streamline electricity distribution processes and provide N.V. Elmar’s customers with access to usage data which would result in more efficient use of power and services. Although the initial network deployment was designed for smart electric meters, N.V. Elmar wanted to have the ability to scale the network to add additional applications. Because this was essentially a greenfield project, the deployment process would start with a pilot program where various technologies would be evaluated. Cost, network longevity, coverage and reliability were all factors in the selection process.

Off-Grid Demand Response Energy Solution
Smart energy and next generation buildings are one of FabCity’s key topics and the Zenodys team was invited there to provide a microgrid demand response power management solution.Next generation buildings are built with a purpose to be energy sustainable and include power-generation capabilities, windmills, solar panels, self-sufficient units, etc. These buildings can generate their own power. However, when connected to a microgrid, other opportunities open up: power exchange among buildings, common storage facility, smart power management, etc. This will become an important part of the future smart cities.Microgrids are a promising concept and are expected to become one of the main energy sources in the future. In order to function as intended, microgrids must be efficiently managed with smart demand response algorithms. The aim of a microgrid is to be as self-sufficient as possible. However, this is not always the case. When the sun shines and there is plenty of wind, the participants generate their own power. But on cloudy or windless days green energy is not always available. To compensate for this, a microgrid also features a battery that stores surplus energy and provides backup power when needed.
