Major Aerospace Company Automates Asset Management
The O&M division of an aerospace and global security company was using spreadsheets to manually track more than 3,000 assets assigned to students and staff. Maintaining audit trails for this high volume of equipment became increasingly time-consuming and challenging. The chore involved knowing precisely what equipment was on hand, what had been issued, its location and the name of the custodial owner of each item. Every aspect of this task was carried owner of each item. Every aspect of this task was carried out by individuals with spreadsheets. Manually documenting the full lifecycle of each asset added to the burden. This included tracking maintenance requirements and records, incidents and damages, repairs, calibrations, depreciation, and end-of-life data.

Novartis Leverages IoT for Enhanced Drug Discovery
Novartis, a global healthcare company, was faced with the challenge of managing and making sense of a vast amount of data. The company had decades of data on how various compounds affect protein targets, with about a billion data points in total. This historical data was critical but sparse compared to the granular data currently being collected. Novartis uses an automated process that captures high-content image data showing how a particular compound has affected an entire cell culture, generating terabytes of phenotypic data. The challenge was to combine this historical data with the burgeoning phenotypic data and place it within the larger context of ongoing medical research from around the world. The team also wanted to combine its data with medical information from NIH’s PubMed, which contains about 25 million abstracts from some 5,600 scientific journals.

Public Sector (CLC)
CLC heavily relied on manual paper-based systems to manage their mission-critical processes. As a result these processes were time consuming, invisible and unproductive driving the organisation to seek company specific process solutions. As Roger Barnes, Manager of CLC's mining activities notes, “The risks associated with this included the lack of integration with the data sets and tripping over statutory deadlines, so things that were supposed to happen at a certain time didn't always happen because we'd lose track of where they were at.” The vehicle booking process in particular required visibility as the organisation maintains more than 80 vehicles, each of which travels great distances per year. Understanding what kind of return the vehicles provided and at the same time managing occupational health and safety requirements were constant challenges for CLC.

Increased Range and Flexibility for Custodia Systems Customers
Custodia Systems is a security consultancy based in the UK. It was founded in 2005 by Peter Thompson, a former Goldman Sachs technology and engineering lead, with start up capital of £4,000 (approximately €4,800). It is now the global distributor of Appello tracking devices and its products currently protect £150 million (€180 million) of construction machinery in the UK.The Appello device is a small, portable unit (no bigger than a smartphone) with a battery life of up to two years. It has no external wiring and cannot be located by scanning devices used by professional thieves like GPS (Global Positioning System) units. The device is hidden, for example among the engineering of a piece of plant machinery and sends out a regular signal to mark its present location. Worldwide, Custodia Systems claims 80% of stolen equipment is recovered and back with its owners within eight hours. To ensure consumer confidence and provide a competitive advantage, Custodia Systems needed a fail-safe communications infrastructure that needed to be international, reliable and as accurate as possible. In addition, to support the launch of the AppelloGEO – a new product that can be used globally – Custodia Systems needed a global platform and fixed price international tariffs.

ECOsine Active Increased Reliability in the Paper Industry
The paper and pulp industry is interlinking intelligent hi-tech machines to highly efficient production lines. Higher power DC and AC motor drives perform the automation tasks. Every kind of interference that negatively affects the reliability and safety of the installation may lead to production downtime and consequently to significant financial losses. AC and DC motor drives are so-called non-linear loads as they draw a nonsinusoidal current from the grid. Resulting harmonics of current and voltage can interfere with the operation of nearby consumers and overload the electrical infrastructure. In this particular application, the load cycles of the drives often caused interruptions in the production process because of disturbances coupling into the fieldbus system.

A New Level of Urban Freight Control via RFID
The municipality of Verona had the exigency to enforce the regulations for commercial vehicles for into the historic city center to reduce traffic, vehicles with permits dedicated to city logistics within certain hours often exceeded the permitted period of stay inside the congestion zone. In addition Verona had the goal to eliminate the falsification of disabled parking passes and increase the on street enforcement. The historic city center of Verona was already equipped with a congestion area system comprising of video cameras, but the ratification of the system limited the functionality of the system. It was not possible to measure time of ingress and egress nor the duration of stay of single vehicles. Once entered, it was not possible to verify if the vehicle spent more than the consented period of time inside the city leading to an increased congestion. For disabled people, the existing solution led to various problems: to access to the city center handicapped drivers or passengers had to inform the municipality up to 48 hours in advance for avoiding a fine and falsificated copies of disabled permits (CUDE) were a frequent problem. A new solution needed to cover all this aspects, while digitizing the related processes to increase efficiency and reduce the workload at the cities helpdesks.

Enabling Next Generation Demand Response Based Power Distribution
There are many sources of electricity available nowadays. In addition to a number of Utility distributors, there is also sun, wind, various co-generation options, etc. Power can also be stored in batteries, facilities or cars. However each of those sources has it’s specifics – the sun doesn’t always shine and wind doesn’t always blow, a battery can get empty… Utility grid is always available, however, power from the grid may be expensive. The challenge that we face next is – how to use those power sources to get the most of them and to justify the investment.

Precision Wearable Biometrics Provider, Valencell, Selects Arxan to Protect Intellectual Property
Years of research and development were invested by the company into their biometric sensor technology. They wanted to ensure that their unique, patented intellectual property (IP) was not compromised or cloned through application attacks, such as reverse-engineering or code tampering. This was particularly important given the increased competitive pressures in the wearables market and the customer’s distribution model of working in partnership with consumer product manufacturers and potentially third party developers. Although patented and protected under NDA, the company’s code and IP could potentially be exposed during the sharing of their technology (in the form of an SDK/library) during integration as partners work to turn their wearable products into biometric wearables. The customer also required ease of use and flexibility such that their proprietary technology could first be easily protected and then be leveraged within another 3rd party application. As such, the solution needed to meet stringent resource consumption requirements of diverse mobile / IoT platforms.
