Rockwell make oil and gas production smart - Ingenu Industrial IoT Case Study
Rockwell make oil and gas production smart
Oil and gas producers are doing everything they can to grind through a period of historically low per barrel oil prices. The period has stretched on for more than a year now, with per barrel prices getting as low as $40. With companies struggling to find revenue in this currently high supply low demand market, it has become increasingly important to minimize maintenance and repair costs. A cheap way of monitoring equipment is by installing sensors and sending information to the cloud, an IoT solution to a problem that has existed for generations.

Lean Manufacturing Process Flows - Decisyon  Industrial IoT Case Study
Lean Manufacturing Process Flows
A multi-national manufacturing company was unable to coordinate the work of all departments involved in the production processes. The company lacked both real-time views into the systems and methods of communication. This situation meant small problems could cause big delays in filling orders, and customers would get frustrated. Additionally, the business’s manufacturing process flow was labor-intensive and error-prone with manual checks on information coming from various departments using Excel spreadsheets. Naturally, the process was slow and not conducive to process improvements, nor was unstructured data (emails, phone calls) shared or saved for future reference. The planning manager wanted a transparent way to find out whether the manufacturing process could fulfill the production plan sent from SAP. As part of his evaluation, he needed to be able to: - Identify potential problems before they happened - Collaborate with coworkers around critical data points - Analyze the historical data, so he could continue to improve the lean production process

Improving Diagnosis Accuracy and Saving Lives - Industrial IoT Case Study
Improving Diagnosis Accuracy and Saving Lives
Dr. Partho Sengupta needed a way to accurately identify disease patterns resulting from echocardiograms in order to improve diagnostics and save more lives. Specifically, he wanted to distinguish between two disparate diseases: cardiomyopathy, which directly impacts the heart muscle and often leads to heart failure, and pericarditis, which acts as if the heart is involved but doesn’t actually affect the heart. While both diseases present with similar heart conditions, the treatments are vastly different. For pericarditis, the treatment may include medication and, rarely, surgery. However, if the diagnosis is cardiomyopathy the patient undergoes medical management (i.e. a pacemaker) or in extreme cases, a heart transplant. Misdiagnosis of these disease conditions can put the patient’s life at risk and be very expensive for the hospital. Dr. Sengupta, therefore, looked to Saffron’s Natural Intelligence Platform to help his team increase the diagnosis accuracy of these medical conditions.

Keeping Product Development Cycles on the Fast Track - Lantronix Industrial IoT Case Study
Keeping Product Development Cycles on the Fast Track
By network-enabling industrial automation equipment, important tasks such as uploading/downloading programs, communicating between controllers, and generating e-mail alerts become possible. Unfortunately, the resources needed to design a solution that can seamlessly tie together a wide diversity of network environments that are widely dispersed, plus rapildly deploy that solution, can present a costly challenge to many equipment manufacturers. Virtually all of Rockwell Automation’s customers have widely dispersed and disparate network environments with a mix of 10Mb and 100Mb Ethernet devices. Having connectivity that would seamlessly accommodate either Ethernet standard became a necessity. Therefore, the company determined that a 10/100Mb Ethernet auto switching capability was required for the ENI interface. Two significant challenges faced the Rockwell design team. First, the small “footprint” of the ENI packaging made the task of finding a networking solution that would fit into the product design very daunting. In addition, time-to-market was a driving factor. In a highly competitive market, Rockwell Automation needed to deliver their network enabled controller products as quickly as possible, and could not afford long development cycles to integrate networking capabilities.

Advance Tunnel Warning System - Wavetronix Industrial IoT Case Study
Advance Tunnel Warning System
The Oregon Department of Transportation has implemented an advance warning system that alerts drivers entering a tunnel to the presence of slow or stopped traffic at the tunnel’s exit. The system uses a combination of SmartSensor Advance and Matrix units to detect traffic; if certain conditions exist, the system activates a flashing sign that warns drivers to slow down.Transportation officials in Oregon were faced with a dangerous traffic situation at the interchange between Interstate 84 and Interstate 205 east of Portland: a significant number of rear-end collisions were occurring because drivers were unaware that traffic ahead of them had slowed or stopped. The problem occurred at a tunnel that drivers must enter to merge from westbound I-84 onto southbound I-205. There is a sharp left turn just after the tunnel and traffic often backs up to the tunnel exit, particularly during peak congestion times. Drivers entering the tunnel at full speed were unaware of conditions ahead of them, and could not see stopped traffic around the turn.

MouseJack Case Study - Bastille Networks Industrial IoT Case Study
MouseJack Case Study
In order to prevent eavesdropping, most vendors encrypt the data being transmitted by wireless keyboards, however it appears that the same security was not built into the mouse communications. The communication between the dongle and mice tested by the research team showed that there was no authentication in place, leaving the dongle unable to determine the difference between commands originating from the user’s mouse and those coming from an attacker. This results in the ability for an attacker to pretend to be a mouse and transmit their own packets to the dongle.

Saving Megawatts with Voltage Optimization - Utilidata Industrial IoT Case Study
Saving Megawatts with Voltage Optimization
Conservation voltage reduction is the practice of operating electric distribution systems at voltages in the lower range of allowable levels, thereby improving the efficiency of many electric utilization devices (e.g. induction and synchronous motors, transformers, lighting systems, etc.).This approach can be applied to a variety of industrial settings; however, using an advanced real-time control system such as AdaptiVolt™ is critical to ensuring that voltages don’t drop to levels that put important processes at risk. AdaptiVolt™ monitors voltages through the facility in real-time and makes control decisions to safely reduce voltage, thereby achieving energy efficiency gains while maintaining process reliability

Hospital Supply Management - Impinj Industrial IoT Case Study
Hospital Supply Management
UT Medical Center and DeRoyal began working together in 2014 initially to develop a new preference card system for use in their operating rooms. What they found was a need to not just optimize physician preference cards, but also a need to analyze supply usage, stocking levels, returns, locations and quantities. They needed a solution that would help make acuity-based decisions and accurately document usage. Improving patient safety during procedures was also a priority. The medical center’s workflow studies found surgical staff leaving the OR for an average of 10.75 minutes per case to fetch supplies needed for OR procedures because they were not readily available in the OR. Such repeated door openings can increase the risk of surgical site infection and contribute to surgical mistakes. UT Medical Center wanted to limit the number of supply-related door openings by having needed supplies readily available, and thereby reduce the risk of surgical site infections. DeRoyal, a medical device manufacturer committed to improving both the clinical quality and economic health of its customers, worked with UT Medical Center to create a solution that would meet the organization’s needs. The solution, an intelligent trashcan called the DeRoyal Continuum® Safe, leverages the Impinj platform to automatically capture data about supplies consumed during surgical procedures.

Robot-supported ultrasonic defect testing and quality control
Ultrasonic testing is a widely used non-destructive test method to check cast parts for invisible defects such as blowholes, pores or cracks. Since the acoustic properties of the material change if those casting defects are present, the ultrasonic sound pulse is reflected and sent back to the test head.Especially if components have complex geometries, ultrasonic testing is often carried out manually. By automating the process with the help of robots, test costs and test time can be reduced and measurements made reproducible.

Sensor Synergy Case Study - Lantronix Industrial IoT Case Study
Sensor Synergy Case Study
Whether sensors are stand-alone, connected to PLCs, interfaced to PCs or tied directly to networks, these devices can be found in a multitude of electronics that affect daily life – from washing machines to windshield wiper blades. Although there are a number of ways to add sensor data to a system, designers and users want to keep the sensor-to-system interface process as easy as possible, and, in many cases, users want this information to be accessible via the Internet. In recent years, the IEEE’s (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering) approval of multiple standards, coupled with the increase of factory automation suppliers differentiating themselves by developing different communications protocols, has resulted in over 50 different hardware and software interface protocols. What initially was an opportunity for factory automation suppliers to provide enhanced new features to their customers has become a challenge for sensor manufacturers. It is increasingly difficult to develop sensor solutions that will interface with all applicable protocols. To help alleviate this problem, smart sensor technology pioneer, Sensor Synergy, developed a near-universal sensor-to-Internet solution utilizing Lantronix Device Networking technologies.
