About The Customer
Coventry University, located in the West Midlands, England, is a prominent institution with a rich history dating back to 1843. The university is known for its innovative teaching and impactful primary research, serving approximately 29,000 students across its campuses in Coventry, London, Scarborough, and internationally in China, Singapore, and Rwanda. Coventry University has received numerous accolades for student satisfaction and teaching quality, including a gold rating in the UK government's Teaching Excellence Framework. The university is a significant contributor to proprietary research and high-value intellectual property, particularly in healthcare, engineering, and the automotive industry, making it a target for cybercriminals.
The Challenge
Coventry University faced significant challenges in managing endpoint security across a highly diverse and volatile global environment. The university's reactive approach to security was inefficient, with frequent reliance on complete disk reimaging to address compromised machines. The university's dynamic portfolio of over 600 applications and a 'bring your own device' (BYOD) policy further complicated the situation, leading to a resource drain on the security team. An independent audit confirmed that endpoint security was the weakest link in the university's defenses, exacerbated by the diverse and unknown nature of devices connecting to the global network.
The Solution
To address its security challenges, Coventry University implemented the CrowdStrike Falcon Complete managed detection and response (MDR) solution. The university deployed a comprehensive suite of CrowdStrike products, including Falcon Device Control, Falcon Discover, Falcon Insight, Falcon OverWatch, Falcon Prevent, Falcon X, Falcon Firewall Management, and Falcon Spotlight. This deployment enabled the university to reduce the number of vendor solutions from seven to three, significantly improving the effectiveness of the security team. The CrowdStrike suite provided comprehensive protection for the university's hybrid environment, securing Microsoft Azure, AWS services, and numerous physical servers and connected devices. CrowdStrike consultants customized existing protocols and interfaces to seamlessly integrate the Falcon modules with the university's existing security infrastructure.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of CrowdStrike solutions reduced the number of vendor solutions from seven to three, streamlining the security management process.
  • The time spent by the infrastructure team on resolving cyber threats decreased significantly, from over 80 hours to under five hours in a measurement period.
  • CrowdStrike's solutions provided comprehensive protection for the university's hybrid environment, securing both cloud-based and physical infrastructure.
  • The university experienced a significant improvement in threat detection and response, with zero-day attacks being identified and isolated within minutes.
  • The visibility provided by CrowdStrike's solutions enabled the university to track key performance metrics and secure appropriate investment for ongoing protection.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The average time to resolve security incidents decreased from 2-3 days to under one hour.
  • The number of PCs needing reimaging due to malicious threats dropped from 18 per week to zero.
  • The number of malicious files found in the network decreased from 56 per month to zero.
  • The number of security-related incidents on the network in a six-month period reduced from 350 to zero.
