About The Customer
Doctors’ Center Hospitals (DCH) is a prominent healthcare conglomerate in Puerto Rico, known for delivering high-quality medical and surgical services. The organization operates four hospitals located in San Juan, Carolina, Manati, and Bayamon, along with two ambulatory clinics in Dorado and Arecibo. With a total of 692 beds, DCH serves a large patient base and employs over 1,500 IT users, including physicians and radiologists. The IT infrastructure is managed by Pedro Rios, the IT director, who oversees data center management, strategic planning, vendor relationships, technical support, and disaster recovery planning. The IT team is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate delivery of patient care information to clinicians, leveraging the right technology to meet the needs of the healthcare facilities.
The Challenge
Doctors’ Center Hospitals faced significant IT challenges due to their reliance on an EMC direct-attached storage (DAS) solution. The existing infrastructure was becoming inadequate as the hospital network expanded, necessitating a centralized data center operation to simplify management for their small IT team. The addition of new applications to remote hospitals required increased bandwidth, which was costly in Puerto Rico, with monthly expenses exceeding $7,000. Despite increasing bandwidth from 20 MB to 50 MB, application performance, particularly for the MEDITECH EHR system, did not improve. The hospital needed a powerful, cost-effective storage solution to enhance application performance and reduce operational costs.
The Solution
Doctors’ Center Hospitals chose the Nutanix Xtreme Computing Platform to address their IT challenges. The decision was influenced by Nutanix's reputation as a high-performance, cost-effective solution, as highlighted in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant. After a successful virtual proof of concept, the hospital purchased a Nutanix NX-3460 system to run their MEDITECH EHR system. Additionally, VMware Horizon View virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) was deployed on the Nutanix platform at three sites, ensuring secure, centralized storage of patient records and compliance with HIPAA regulations. The compact 2U Nutanix systems fit well within the limited infrastructure space, reducing the data center footprint from eight rack units to four, resulting in significant savings on power, facilities costs, and labor. The Nutanix solution also eliminated application latencies, with performance consistently below the 3-5 millisecond threshold, without the need for additional bandwidth. The Nutanix Prism management console simplified administration, providing a single interface for monitoring infrastructure status and usage analytics.
Operational Impact
  • The Nutanix Xtreme Computing Platform enabled Doctors’ Center Hospitals to centralize their data center operations, simplifying management for their small IT team.
  • The deployment of VMware Horizon View VDI on the Nutanix platform ensured secure, centralized storage of patient records, aiding in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • The compact 2U Nutanix systems reduced the data center footprint from eight rack units to four, resulting in significant savings on power, facilities costs, and labor.
  • Nutanix eliminated application latencies, with performance consistently below the 3-5 millisecond threshold, without the need for additional bandwidth.
  • The Nutanix Prism management console simplified administration, providing a single interface for monitoring infrastructure status and usage analytics.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Obtained a high-performance solution at 1/3 the cost of Cisco/EMC.
  • Reduced datacenter footprint from 8U to 4U, saving on power and facilities costs.
  • Decreased latencies for MEDITECH EHR system for remote facilities.
