Delivery Hero is a leading local delivery platform founded in 2011 and headquartered in Berlin. The company operates in more than 40 countries across four continents. Currently, Delivery Hero is pioneering 'quick commerce,' the next generation of e-commerce, aiming to deliver groceries and household goods to customers in as little as 10 to 15 minutes. In 2020, the company saw the number of orders placed through their application almost double in just a few months due to the global pandemic. This sharp increase in demand meant that Delivery Hero's Pandora team, which operates the largest backend platform at the company, needed to ensure that their system could scale reliably to meet the needs of their customers.
The Challenge
Delivery Hero, a leading local delivery platform, experienced a sharp increase in application traffic due to the global pandemic. They leveraged Kubernetes to scale and maintain their containerized environment, but visibility gaps threatened their ability to handle the increased traffic. Their existing open source tools could only monitor one of their clusters at a time, creating critical blind spots during updates or new cluster additions. They also lacked visibility into their DNS services, which are used by Kubernetes for service discovery and communication. This lack of visibility made them vulnerable to potentially large-scale outages and slowed down the issue detection and resolution process.
The Solution
Delivery Hero adopted Datadog to gain complete, uninterrupted visibility into their Kubernetes clusters without having to manage any open source tooling. Datadog's unified platform allowed them to view crucial monitoring data from their infrastructure, applications, and network in a single pane of glass, greatly streamlining their troubleshooting process. Datadog Network Performance Monitoring (NPM) provided deep insight into their network and DNS by providing key metrics, such as traffic volume, latency, and retransmits, all with extremely low overhead. Datadog Log Management allowed Delivery Hero to quickly explore system-wide activity in an intuitive and cost-effective way. This monitoring data is tied together in Datadog’s unified platform, which enables Delivery Hero to pivot seamlessly between application performance data, logs, and network traffic.

Ensures Cold Milk in Your Supermarket
As of 2014, AK-Centralen has over 1,500 Danish supermarkets equipped, and utilizes 16 operators, and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. AK-Centralen needed the ability to monitor the cooling alarms from around the country, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Each and every time the door to a milk cooler or a freezer does not close properly, an alarm goes off on a computer screen in a control building in southwestern Odense. This type of alarm will go off approximately 140,000 times per year, equating to roughly 400 alarms in a 24-hour period. Should an alarm go off, then there is only a limited amount of time to act before dairy products or frozen pizza must be disposed of, and this type of waste can quickly start to cost a supermarket a great deal of money.

Supermarket Energy Savings
The client had previously deployed a one-meter-per-store monitoring program. Given the manner in which energy consumption changes with external temperature, hour of the day, day of week and month of year, a single meter solution lacked the ability to detect the difference between a true problem and a changing store environment. Most importantly, a single meter solution could never identify root cause of energy consumption changes. This approach never reduced the number of truck-rolls or man-hours required to find and resolve issues.
