About The Customer
GTECH is a prominent commercial operator and technology provider in the regulated global gaming markets. The company offers a comprehensive suite of gaming products, including machine gaming, systems, interactive, sports betting, and lotteries. Through its SPIELO product brand, GTECH designs, manufactures, and distributes top-performing games, cabinets, central systems, and associated software to legal gaming markets worldwide. The SPIELO brand caters to diverse gaming segments, including distributed government-sponsored markets, commercial casino markets, and Amusement With Prize (AWP) markets. GTECH is committed to delivering high-quality products and maintaining the highest level of integrity in its operations. The company sought to improve its manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency and maintain its reputation for quality and compliance.
The Challenge
GTECH, a leading provider in the gaming industry, was seeking to enhance the efficiency of its manufacturing operations at its Canadian facility in Moncton, New Brunswick. The company faced challenges in maintaining high-quality standards and ensuring compliance with local gaming industry regulations. The manual assembly process of gaming machines, which involved assembling machines from standard cabinet types with tailored sub-assemblies and components, required a robust system to manage the complexity and ensure traceability of critical parts. The traditional method of recording build records manually on paper was inefficient and prone to errors, making it difficult to maintain accurate records and respond swiftly to customer queries regarding product traceability.
The Solution
GTECH implemented the Lighthouse Systems Shopfloor-OnlineTM MES to address its manufacturing challenges. The system provided comprehensive functionalities that enabled GTECH to automate its build validation process, ensuring that the correct components were used in the assembly of gaming machines. Shopfloor-OnlineTM created electronic Build Records for each machine, listing all critical parts and quality checks performed throughout the production process. The system integrated with GTECH's ERP to download Work Orders and BOM forms, scheduling and releasing parts to production based on priority and availability. Operators could view BOMs on their screens, distinguishing between critical and non-critical parts, and request additional parts as needed. The system also provided real-time alerts to prevent incorrect part installation and allowed for exception handling when parts were unavailable. Shopfloor-OnlineTM facilitated quality checks at various stages of production, enabling operators to quickly address defects and trace defective parts back to their suppliers. The system's integration eliminated the need for paper-based records, providing GTECH with accurate, up-to-date production and quality data.
Operational Impact
  • Shopfloor-OnlineTM provided GTECH with a centralized system that eliminated the need for paper-based data recording, saving the company significant costs on paper and manual handling.
  • The system offered real-time access to production and quality data, enabling faster escalation and resolution of production issues.
  • Operators could visualize their daily production targets and individual performance, contributing to quick adoption and improved productivity.
  • The system's quality acquisitions allowed for standardized defect recording and immediate traceability of defective parts to their suppliers.
  • GTECH was able to consolidate its in-house databases into one system, automating manual processes and eliminating the need for frequent production meetings.
Quantitative Benefit
  • GTECH saved an estimated $30,000 annually on paper costs alone.
  • The implementation of Shopfloor-OnlineTM resulted in a productivity increase estimated at approximately five percent.
  • Cost reductions for 2014 were expected to exceed $450,000 due to the system's efficiencies.
