About The Customer
Karling Racing, a prominent name in the racing industry, has been designing and building motorcycle engines since 1992. The company was founded by Charley Karling, who was dissatisfied with the existing two-cylinder V-twin engines available in the market, particularly those resembling Harley-Davidson styles. Charley Karling's passion for racing led him to compete in the International and National Motorcycle Drag-Racing Class, specifically in the Supertwin Top Fuel Dragbike category. Over the years, Karling Racing has achieved significant success, including winning the European Championship Series and setting multiple speed records with dragbikes designed using IRONCAD. The company is known for its innovative approach to motorcycle engine design, focusing on high performance, reliability, and customization to meet the specific needs of their customers.
The Challenge
The major motorcycle engine design challenge for Karling Racing's new dragbike was to create a self-supporting powertrain that included the engine, supercharger, primary transmission, and clutch without relying on a chassis. Previous motorcycle designs allowed for excessive flex, leading to alignment issues with transmission belts, which could result in catastrophic failures due to the immense torque and forces involved in drag-racing. Additionally, Karling Racing aimed to achieve easier handling, simpler servicing, and exceptional speed in their new motorcycle design.
The Solution
Karling Racing addressed their motorcycle engine design challenges by leveraging the capabilities of IRONCAD, a powerful design software. The team participated in a four-day training course at IronCAD distributor Solidmarkana's offices in Stockholm, Sweden, which enabled them to fully utilize the software's features. With IRONCAD, Karling Racing was able to design all critical components of the motorcycle, including the power unit, wheel and brake mountings, front fork brackets, body mountings, fuel system, and clutch management. The software's flexibility allowed them to create a self-supporting powertrain without a chassis, addressing the alignment issues that plagued previous designs. Additionally, IRONCAD facilitated the design of a high-performance piston, enabling precise measurements of the dome volume and compression ratio, as well as accurate valve clearances. This comprehensive design approach ensured optimal engine performance and reliability.

Integral Plant Maintenance
Mercedes-Benz and his partner GAZ chose Siemens to be its maintenance partner at a new engine plant in Yaroslavl, Russia. The new plant offers a capacity to manufacture diesel engines for the Russian market, for locally produced Sprinter Classic. In addition to engines for the local market, the Yaroslavl plant will also produce spare parts. Mercedes-Benz Russia and his partner needed a service partner in order to ensure the operation of these lines in a maintenance partnership arrangement. The challenges included coordinating the entire maintenance management operation, in particular inspections, corrective and predictive maintenance activities, and the optimizing spare parts management. Siemens developed a customized maintenance solution that includes all electronic and mechanical maintenance activities (Integral Plant Maintenance).

Monitoring of Pressure Pumps in Automotive Industry
A large German/American producer of auto parts uses high-pressure pumps to deburr machined parts as a part of its production and quality check process. They decided to monitor these pumps to make sure they work properly and that they can see any indications leading to a potential failure before it affects their process.
