About The Customer
Interval Leisure Group (ILG) is a prominent global provider of non-traditional lodging, offering a diverse portfolio of travel, leisure, membership, exchange, resort management, and rental businesses. The company operates under several brands, including Interval International and Trading Places International (TPI), which provide exchange and travel-related products to over 2 million member families worldwide. Additionally, under a license from Hyatt, Hyatt Vacation Ownership markets and manages shared ownership properties and operates the Hyatt Residence Club. Vacation Resorts International, VRI Europe, and TPI offer timeshare resort, homeowners’ association, and club management services, while Aston Hotels & Resorts and Aqua Hospitality provide hotel and condominium rentals and resort management. Headquartered in Miami, Florida, ILG has a global presence with offices in 16 countries and nearly 6,000 employees, making it a significant player in the vacation industry.
The Challenge
Interval Leisure Group faced significant challenges with their existing Microsoft DNS system, which lacked a centralized or automated IPAM database. This deficiency hindered the security team's ability to gain visibility and generate reports necessary for analyzing security incidents. Additionally, the network team, operating in a dynamic environment characterized by aggressive business expansion, required automation to replace the time-consuming and error-prone spreadsheets they were using. The hospitality industry, in which Interval operates, has been a frequent target of data breaches due to its rich databases of credit-card data and personally identifiable information. In 2014, Interval's security operation center correlated over 19 million alerts, with 8,500 classified as medium-to-high-threat alerts. The legacy environment's reliance on spreadsheets resulted in significant delays in conducting forensic investigations, with each incident taking between two and four hours to diagnose. This inefficiency was compounded by the frequent reassignment of IP addresses, leading to inaccurate investigation results. Recognizing the need for a more robust solution, Interval sought to re-architect their environment with Infoblox Secure DNS.
The Solution
To address the challenges faced by Interval Leisure Group, the company implemented a comprehensive solution from Infoblox. This included the Infoblox DDI, which integrates DNS, DHCP, and IP address management via a single user interface and a shared database. This integration was crucial in addressing the network team's concerns and significantly accelerated the security team's task of investigating malware. The Infoblox DNS Firewall and the Infoblox Security Ecosystem were also deployed to supplement Interval's existing FireEye solution, providing an additional layer of defense against zero-day malware. By integrating with FireEye, the DNS Firewall enabled Interval to leverage Infoblox DNS-level blocking and device fingerprinting to detect and disrupt APT malware communication, enhancing the accuracy of identifying infected devices attempting to access malicious domains. The deployment of these solutions is ongoing and will eventually be rolled out to all of Interval Leisure Group's subsidiaries. Once complete, Infoblox DDI running on patented Infoblox Grid™ technology will provide Interval with state-of-the-art IPAM and automated error checking on a highly available, fault-tolerant, and scalable platform. This comprehensive solution is expected to improve both security and network management efficiency across Interval's complex network, which supports thousands of resorts worldwide.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Infoblox solutions led to more efficient and cost-effective management of core network services.
  • Interval Leisure Group gained better command of IP addresses, enabling more rapid detection of infected endpoints.
  • The deployment provided an additional layer of protection against advanced persistent threats and malware.
  • The Infoblox solution is expected to improve security and network management efficiency across Interval's complex network.
  • The integration with FireEye enhanced the accuracy of identifying infected devices attempting to access malicious domains.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The security operation center correlated over 19 million alerts in 2014, with 8,500 classified as medium-to-high-threat alerts.
  • Each security incident took between two and four hours to diagnose in the legacy environment.
