HARTMANN, a global leader in medical device manufacturing, operates in over 35 markets worldwide. The company faced the challenge of maintaining a uniform and organized IT infrastructure across its vast facilities and workforce. Universite de Montreal Enhances Network Services with Infoblox DDI Solution
To deliver essential DNS services, the university had multiple UNIX platforms throughout the campus that had different OS and open source software versions for delivering DNS and DHCP. Universite de Montreal had developed an in-house IPAM solution which was very complex and hard to manage. Because it was based on open source, it proved difficult to maintain, as the IT team had to edit multiple files on different systems without any sophisticated automation system. The monitoring of DNS and DHCP was difficult as the IT team often faced a lack of addresses in the DHCP pool. And, managing the authentication to the system by using the university’s centralized LDAP was a factor, so being able to delegate zone and subzones to local managers was also very important. Finally, the university was in the process of migrating from a public based IP address domain to a secure and private Class A. Michel L’Heureux, Director of Telecommunications at Universite de Montreal came to the decision that their homegrown solution was compromising network availability and becoming increasingly difficult to administer; it was time to look for another solution.

Allied Irish Banks Enhances Network Management with Infoblox Grid Technology
The majority of AIB’s banking transactions take place away from the branch counter today, and the bank is working to add technology to its branch locations with self-service kiosks and intelligent deposit devices, and to enhance its mobile and online banking services. AIB’s network supports internal financial systems and external customer-facing systems, which makes the management of Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), and IP address management (IPAM) extremely critical. When asked what the consequences of a network failure would be, Daniel Turner, network planner for the Telecoms group within AIB IT, says, “We wouldn’t be able to operate effectively—back to paper transactions!” The bank already had a commercial-grade solution in place that utilized Alcatel-Lucent Vital QIP for internal IPAM and a solution from another vendor for external. But in 2010, it was time to upgrade the system, and Vital QIP upgrades are time-consuming because it has so many components. The Sybase database, for instance, requires an enterprise server on the front end, separate from the appliances that host DNS services. In addition, the per-IP-address licensing is very expensive, especially in an environment like AIB’s where devices are frequently added to the network. So upgrading and continuing to operate the solution was an expensive proposition, and Turner wanted to see if there was a better alternative.

Infoblox Solution Enhances DNS Infrastructure for North American ISP, Reducing Costs and Latency
The customer needed to update its Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure to reduce overall operational support costs—including licensing and maintenance expense. The incumbent vendor of proprietary DNS software was attempting to force the customer to accept a forklift upgrade to a new platform, triggering expensive new license and platform costs. The customer evaluated vendors to determine whether a more cost-effective approach with sufficient future-proofing could be found. In order to eliminate dependencies on server hardware and software integration issues, evaluators were willing to consider an appliance-based solution. They were also concerned about the level of effort required to support an in-house DNS system that required frequent server operating system (OS) patching, updates, and troubleshooting. Operational concerns included the need to maintain a low DNS response time in order to deliver high customer-satisfaction levels, since DNS latency is a key parameter that affects customer experience and therefore impacts customer churn. A second concern was the placement of remote DNS servers close to customers at the network edge. This was desirable to reduce DNS latency, but a distributed DNS system has the potential to stress the internal operations team, who need a centralized view of network conditions with remote visibility of all DNS servers. Also a factor was the ability to provide automated failover in disaster-recovery scenarios.

While this was great from a business perspective, the company’s IT division began to take note of the strain being placed on its fixed core network, which was essential to its fiber to the x (FTTx) offerings. At the time, it was providing each of its enterprise customers with dedicated on-premises DHCP, which added to both the cost and complexity of the network. Global Consumer Health Products Company Enhances Network Security with Infoblox and FireEye
The company manages a vast, globally distributed network that serves all its operating companies, and advanced persistent threats (APTs) in particular keep network managers awake at night. FireEye Threat Prevention Platforms are deployed to guard against APTs at eight hub locations that carry 99 percent of the company’s Internet traffic for EMEA, Asia-Pacific, and North America. And during a proof-of-concept test to demonstrate FireEye’s effectiveness, the security team uncovered an alarming fact. The FireEye software, which was configured on the side as a monitoring system rather than inline as a blocking system, was detecting from 35 to 40 thousand DNS requests every day going to or from domains associated with known malware products. But network managers had no way to identify the infected devices. FireEye was identifying the company’s Infoblox DNS servers, some of which were handling thousands of queries, as the source of the malicious communications—but what was actually going on was that Trojans, APTs, and other types of malware on infected clients were asking the DNS servers to phone home for them. And the FireEye alerts were identifying the Infoblox servers rather than the infected devices themselves as the source. So while network managers could count the communications with malicious domains, they couldn’t pinpoint the specific clients on their network that were sending them. And they asked Infoblox, “How can you help us see what we cannot see today?”
