The Challenge
Five years ago, Lewisville Independent School District (LISD) transitioned from a Novell system to Microsoft Windows servers for managing DNS and DHCP. However, within six months, it became apparent that the system couldn't deliver the stability needed to support the district's commitment to incorporating technology into teaching and learning. The district is a leader in using technology to revitalize education, with initiatives like online instruction and providing iPads to staff and students. The network team, consisting of only four IT technicians, manages over 100,000 network devices, including laptops, iPads, and other machines. The district's BYOD initiative further increases the number of devices on the network. The challenge was to have a DNS/DHCP system resilient enough to handle the traffic over the upgraded network.
The Solution
Five years ago, the Network Department at LISD asked Infoblox to demonstrate its solution. Impressed with the demonstration, they recommended it to IT management, who approved the purchase of 12 Infoblox appliances. These appliances were deployed at a single location in the district, with eight used for internal DNS and DHCP, one high-availability pair for external DNS, and another pair dedicated to consolidated database functions. The solution was installed over a weekend, with a smooth cutover from the legacy Microsoft system. Infoblox Professional Services provided automation scripts, helped implement the solution, and made periodic site visits to ensure everything was running smoothly.
