About The Customer
The customer is a large U.S. bank that had been an Infoblox customer for four years at the time of this case study. The bank's IT team, consisting of five technicians, was responsible for managing a portion of the bank's network. Prior to adopting Infoblox solutions, the team used DNS and DHCP software from a major vendor, running on UNIX servers. The bank faced challenges with network service availability and security, particularly in protecting DNS servers from advanced threats and ensuring compliance with service-level agreements. The bank sought a solution that could provide redundancy, failover, and high availability to maintain uninterrupted services for its customers.
The Challenge
During the process of applying security patches to the DNS servers, incompatibilities between the UNIX code and the DNS and DHCP vendor’s code brought down the DNS system. This resulted in a significant disruption where every single system at the bank became unavailable or severely crippled, affecting the bank's operations and customer access to services. The IT manager realized the need for a more integrated, centrally managed solution to ensure the availability of core network services and protect DNS servers against advanced persistent threats, malware, and denial-of-service attacks.
The Solution
The bank implemented Infoblox Grid™ technology, which offers features for redundancy, failover, and high availability, making it an ideal choice for the bank's needs. Infoblox DDI was used to integrate DNS, DHCP, and IP address management (IPAM), providing a comprehensive core network service solution. Additionally, Infoblox DNS Firewall was deployed to block malware communications and prevent denial-of-service attacks, ensuring the availability of network services. Infoblox Professional Services assisted with the rollout, ensuring a smooth transition to the new system. The bank also plans to integrate the Infoblox Security Ecosystem with FireEye Multi-Vector Execution (MVX) engine to enhance its security posture further, allowing for automated responses to security alerts.
Operational Impact
  • The bank now has a consolidated and highly redundant infrastructure, which simplifies hardware replacement processes. IT staff can replace devices without needing to restore data from tapes, thanks to a one-page script distributed to workers in the data center.
  • Redundancy and failover mechanisms ensure that end users are not affected by hardware issues, helping the IT team meet service-level agreements.
  • The bank's IT team is better equipped to handle network security threats, with plans to further enhance security measures against advanced persistent threats, malware, and denial-of-service attacks.
