About The Customer
Intesa Sanpaolo Group is Italy's largest banking group, headquartered in Turin, Italy. It serves more than 15 million customers and manages thousands of buildings, making it one of the largest real estate owners in the country. The bank has a strong commitment to sustainability and is focused on reducing its environmental footprint. With more than 40 million square feet of assets, Intesa Sanpaolo is poised to make a significant impact on sustainability at a massive scale. The bank's real estate and facility management team, known as DCIL, is dedicated to improving operational efficiency and reducing energy consumption across its properties. Intesa Sanpaolo is also committed to enhancing its internal competencies and skills in IoT and AI to maintain its position as a market leader.
The Challenge
Intesa Sanpaolo Group, Italy's leading banking group, faced the challenge of improving its real estate operations and facility management to cut waste and reduce its environmental footprint. The bank manages thousands of buildings and is one of the largest real estate owners in Italy, with more than 40 million square feet of assets. The challenge was to reduce energy consumption, improve comfort, and optimize operational efficiency across its vast real estate portfolio. The bank needed a solution that would provide real-time visibility into HVAC and other systems in its buildings, enabling data-driven actions to be taken. The complexity of the bank's environment required a robust and secure solution, as data protection is a critical concern for the bank.
The Solution
Intesa Sanpaolo collaborated with Microsoft and ICONICS to implement a solution that provides real-time visibility into HVAC and other systems in its buildings. The solution leverages Azure IoT Hub for data ingestion, Azure Data Factory for monitoring and real-time data analysis, and Power BI for data visualization. ICONICS's fault detection and diagnostics technology allows for the customization of fault rules to predict equipment failures and recommend preventive actions. The solution creates a 'digital twin' of building assets, enabling data-driven actions to be taken. The bank's Data Control Room Immobiliare (DCRI) team supports continuous innovation in building management processes and enhances internal competencies in IoT and AI. The platform provides a unified view of data from various systems, enabling rapid resolution of issues and improving operational efficiency.
Operational Impact
  • The solution provides real-time visibility into energy consumption and faults, enabling rapid resolution of issues.
  • Dashboards offer a high-level view of energy usage, comfort, and operational continuity, with automatic reports for maintenance.
  • The platform allows for the identification of anomalies and faulty components, improving operational efficiency.
  • The DCRI team supports continuous innovation and enhances internal competencies in IoT and AI.
  • The platform is a critical tool for Intesa Sanpaolo DCIL to accelerate its journey to becoming a data-driven organization.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Reduced annual energy consumption by 15%, equivalent to 2.5 GWh per year.
  • Anticipated reduction of energy footprint by a total of 10 GWh with the addition of three more buildings.
  • Demonstrated annual savings of 500,000 euros with the Azure IoT platform and ICONICS.
  • Potential savings of about two million euros each year if similar savings are achieved in other buildings.
